its normal, the tranny will not shift into OD (4th gear foryou) until it is up to operating temp

(i am assuming that you have a 4 spd overdrive auto tranny)

Mine shifts fine when cold but it is ideal to stay out of OD until the tranny is warm. Was this something that was changed with the 01's and up or is a feature of the 4.7? My wifes car actually won't shift into 3rd until it is a little warm and won't shift to OD until it reaches operating temp.

I have this build into mine. (1998 46-RE)

It's on the other trans (except 4.7L) because if the trany slips into overdrive being that cold it can take OD out. This was a saftey that was installed into the PCM as a fail safe and let me say that it is a good one at that.

The radiator also cools the trany fluid but also warms the fluid (this warms the trans) which alows better flow of fluid into direct areas (because of the transmission bands in ours). It will shift well before it's warm up but, is intended to engage at temps around 32 degrees F or below.

im pretty sure it IS on the 4.7s (and all the others) bc mine wont hit OD until is warm, but i got a 5 spd auto in mine so its not as big of a deal to be stuck w/ only 4, i usually keep OD off around town anyway, and im warm before i hit the highway

Well Sharp it may surprise you but we have a ski resort right up the road here in Reno. It's been near 0 degrees some mornings when I leave for work.
