I've got a 99 durango 5.9 SLT, 4 wheel ABS. The ABS was engaging about 80% of the time when slowing to a stop, (No lights on the dash). I reviewed this site and found that the ABS sensor could be corroded, thus giving a bad signal. The rear ABS sensor was recently replaced. I removed the fuse for the ABS system until I can clean or replace the front sensor this weekend, (ABS and Brake lights on now). I did not read the entire thread since I'm at work, just the first and last page, so this may have been mentioned beefore. Hope this helps.

Default Well, looks like this is my NEWEST problem.

Can't wait to dive into this thread and get this taken care of on my 2001 Durango RT. I have NO breaks right now...
The ABS and Brake lights are on and for some reason my truck is NOT showing codes with the on off on off on trick anymore??????
Edit... I tried again SLOWER this time and got 1281, 0442 and 0455 My usual codes that I've had forever for needing a new gas cap and Engine Cold???
Nothing to do with my ABS or Brakes.
So, it's sitting in the driveway.
Ugh...

Hey DurangoRT/NT It looks like you have a leak under your Durando,, I could be your brake line busted that goes across the front fram so maybe thats why you don't have brackes or it it your radiator leaking,, Check your brake fluid an see if it full or not,,

the engine cold code could be a t-stat stuck open.

as for the abs and brake light being on, the most common cause is a bad rear wheel abs sensor and/or a bad transmission output speed sensor. the ABS and brake lights on will not throw a code which can be read with the keydance trick, you need a DRBIII tool in order to read the ABS codes. Low brake fluid can also set off these lights, so check that and if its low you have a leak which is also the cause of no brakes most likely.

Russ, that looks like water.

Laura;

P1281 Engine is Cold Too Long
P0442 Evap Leak Monitor Medium Leak Detected
P0455 Evap Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected

You either need a new T-stat or a coolant temp sensor for the P1281.
The others are gas cap or rubber lines are cracked and need replacement.

As for the ABS, you can not get codes from the system without hooking it up to a OBD-III reader. The ABS CAB actually has the codes, not the PCM, they are 2 separate systems.

With you saying you have no brakes right now, I take that as the petal is going to the floor, I think maybe the master cylinder is shot. If it's just the ABS system and the hydraulics seem fine then maybe the CAB is bad and needs rebuilt.

Thanks guys! And yes Rustin, that was water, from over 2 yrs ago

Love all the tips. The brakes are toast. I have NONE...
I will replace the brake pads and probably rotors too and be sure to "bleed the line." I hope it's not the Master Cylinder.

Gosh, I'm really on my like 3rd thermostat! So I will trouble shoot it best I can, but maybe need the coolant sensor fix.

The good thing is I don't NEED my truck like I did and can fix it slower... lol

Thanks again guys!!!!!

Wow 11 years for your back brakes huh,,,lol,, Well when you put new brakes on it then be sure to adjust the back brakes so they will work for you,,lol,, Hopefully all you need to do is put the front pads on but I would put the back brake shoes on also since its been 11 years. An I am sure you will need to bleed the brakes also after putting new ones on, An hopefully your lights are on just because you need to put new brakes on an bleed them, An sometimes if you let the brakes go down to metal to metal then the calerpiers can can go bad,, So hope things works out for you,,
