Sounds like the 3-4 shift solenoid.

There are no bands in that trans so drop the pan replace the solenoid and filter and replace and fill.
Is there more than one solenoid?

I beleive there is only one solenoid on the 3-4 shift. While you have it out look at the springs for it as well.

how do you tell which one is the 3-4? I have never replaced anything in a trans b4 except the filter. So you just unbolt the valve body, pull it down and remove the solenoid from the side of it?

The parts that shown in the pictures are a 46RE transmission, not a 45RFE. Top picture is the 3/4 shift solenoid and governor. If you are loosing 3rd gear and no 4th, remove the pan and inspect the plate on the side of the valve body. These plates do snap off the bolt heads and cause you to loose 3rd and 4th gears. Your 3/4 shift solenoid is part of your solenoid pack on top of the valve body. There is a replace kit for the valve body if you need it. If the plate is not broken, then you may have a clutch or seal problem. Also there are no band ajustment on this transmission.

I was told that some idiot worked for dodge in 02-03 that over torqued a ton of the accumulator plates. The bolts are overstressed and eventually snap off. I found a place that sells the repair kit - thicker plates and extra bolts - for $25. MASTERTECH, thanks for the confirmation about the above parts. I will keep u guys updated!
