Default Oil Pan Gasket is Weeping on Me...

Hi,

anybody know if you have to raise the engine to replace the oil pan gasket...??

There is a cross member on my 5.9l 2WD D that prevents the pan from being directly dropped out...or at least I think it does...

anybody attempted this...

Chris

There is two ways to do it. Raise the motor enough to drop the pan enough to get a new gasket on it.

I have taken a new gasket and cut it on one side in a " < " then cut out the old one and wrap the new one in and use RTV in the place that is cut into a " < " to seal it up. I used a rubber gasket.

I'm not familiar with the 4X2 though?

Hi Chris
Try to remove the fan blade and dist cap.Lossen the motor mount bolts and raise the engine. You will need to remove the oil pick up tube and rotate the so the crank balance wieghts are pointing up into the block. The will slide out. The reason for the fan and dist cap, is so you don't break the cap on the bulkhead and you don't crack the shoud.

Rotate crank balance weights and point em up???????

Also the transmission mount would need to be loosened correct, or are you talking about pulling the motor?

Sorry, but really lost here?

Sadly the cross member is an integral part of the chassis and it passes under the oil pan on my 2WD - short of using a cutting torch it ain't going anywhere...!!

I think that it might be possible to (and the Haynes manual talks about this as well) support the engine, undo the supports and (having removed the distributor cap) raise the engine just sufficiently to slip the oil pan backwards and down...

This is too bigger job for me so the D's off to the dealer when I'm on leave in Feb - otherwise I'd have taken it to an oil change shop, stuck it up on a lift and done it myself (to the amusement of all as the expat gets himself covered in oil)

Anyway its the Hajj holiday today and I'm off to a scrapyard in south Riyadh to search through a small mountain of steering racks - yes the D's rack is beginning to leak oil as well...!!

Have the oil pump replaced at the same time because they will be in the pan!!!

I noticed I have an input seal gone bad on me on the steering box. Thinking about doing a junker box and rebuilding it for a lil fun and more mechanic skills then swaping. I was lookin at the junker yard yesterday and I saw 3 ABS modules I could pick up and sell.......IDK?

If you need to replace a pan gasket on a 4x4 durango, you can use the same way to remove the oil pan.But there is a bit more work to get the pan out. Rack&pinion would need be drop off the crossmember, the front diff can be lower on to the lower control arms, but drive shaft would need to come out. Here is why you rotate the crankshaft. When you have the engine lifted to the point of and you are so close to have the pan off but can't, by rotating the balance weights the pan will slide out from the rear. Before you install the new gasket, apply RTV to each corner of the block.
