But back to being offtopic, the 45rfe is a "fully electronic" transmission, meaning instead of the old school governor and throttle valves, shifting is controlled by solenoids. The 545rfe is a 45rfe that has an extra overdrive.

The 42re and 46re are the 42rh and 46rh with an electrically controlled hydraulic governor valve instead of the mechanical hydraulic governor valve. That was really the only difference. The 42rh, also called an a500, is a torqueflite 998 with an electronic overdrive unit in it's tail. The 998 was a 904 in a 727 case. The 46rh, also called an a518, was a torqueflite 727 with an electronic overdrive unit in it's tail.

I know nothing about the 44re.
Thanks.

Anyway the user specified he has a
Got a 2000 durango sport.

and it has a 318 motor
The 318 is a 5.2L motor hence the 42RE.

Your Durango needs ATF+4 fluid but I see you used ATF+3. It is ok but I would do a change in the next 15k miles. You need to adjust the bands and or the shift linkage, tho and so you need to drop the trans pan to do it. Ideally the time to replace the fluid with ATF+4.

Lucus is not recomended! It is an additive that is not regulated like herbs.

I notice on the owners post 3 and 4, that he had a 318 engine then on post 4 he looked and said he had 4.7L. The 4.7L has a 45RFE or 545RFE, there are no band adjustments. But is the mil lite on? The 5.2 has the 42/44RE trans and there are two band adjustments. Use only ATF+4 fluid. When drop the pan inspect for any dubris.

Since when did they bolt a 42re behind a 5.2? I thought it was always the 46 that was behind it. The 42 is kinda weak for that much engine.

Looks like they used it as verified in the Service Manual and many other places. Also used were the 44RE so it could have been either or on the 5.2L. The 46RE didn't go in anything other that the 5.9L that I know of. I did find that the same 42RE also bolted to the 3.9L if you can believe that. Anyway, regardless the 54RFE were only bolted to 4.7L motors in the 2000-2002 Durangos and 545RFE in 2003 if I remember correctly.

Back on topic.
