Alas, poor D, we hardly knew ye...
My son decided to go for a joy ride in the Durango - the one i'd been babying along with trying to keep the oil pressure alive. Unfortunately his idea of "babying" and mine are misaligned and the net is that he grenaded the engine.
It now makes very expensive sounds while cranking but it Starteth Not, Neither Doth It Respond.
So.
My choices are two, as I see it; a DIY engine pull and rebuild (I hear rebuilt 4.7s are not cheap) or a wreck pull and either put it in or pay someone to do it.
Now, to my question. Do I have options here? Specifically, can I replace the 4.7 L with a diesel motor, or a 5.9 if I get it cheaper? (I saw a 5.9 on Craigslist around Thanksgiving, but demurred. What if, what if. So I need some opinions.
Rebuild,yes or no?
4.7 L to 5.9, yes or no? How hard?
4.7L to diesel, yes or no? How hard?

darn those little darlings.
rebuild ? maybe. you won't know the cost until you pull the engine, tear it down, and see what needs replacing. if the engine is ok enough to avoid a lot of machine shop work and a million new parts, maybe you can get by with the basics. on the other hand, if the oil pressure was loweth, and your rpm's were higheth, your crank and cam may be in bad shape.
i think i'd search for a junk yard motor and just swap it in. it'll probably cost less and be a lot less work.
diesel ? nope. you'd be better off to try and put a durango body on a ctd than a stuff a ctd running gear into a durango.
5.9 ? i think you'd be a lot better off to stick with the orginal motor size. no mysteries, conversion, or adaptions to invent.

+1 unless you know exactly what you are doing stick with another 4.7, and dont let your son drive it anymore
