Looks dirty and burnt. Replace more often and check the heat. That is not sludge.

ok so it looks burnt and dirty. and you said to replace often and watch the heat. Do you mean replace the oil? and heat?

Use a quality oil and change every 3000-5000 as if your trucks life depends on it... because it does.

Make sure your coolant is fresh and up to par, levels are good and that the Durango isn't running hot.

Reading this simply because we just bought our 2000 Durango and I already had the oil changed at Midas once. I'm going to do it myself next time, but was wondering what type of oil I should get?

It's a 2000 SLT 4x4 4.7

Many have used Mobil1 fully synthetic. Same have said that they experienced leakag. That is due to the high viscosity of the new oil. It gets into more nooks and crannies han regular oil. I changed mine to M1 and haven't had any leaks (knock on wood).

I prefer Mobil One Fully Synthetic High Mileage 10W-30.

Dan<---- The viscosity is the same however the detergents are better so they do a better job cleaning cleaning out the crap in the motor and might clean up some weep spots (soft spots) in the gaskets that "could" result in a small leak. It is worth changing over though!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Mobil One it is.

From the research I've done, it seems the 4.7l takes 6 quarts of oil from drain. Is this correct?

I've never done an oil change myself so I might just try it, or buy a case and give it to a lube shop to do for me. Sadly my expertise is with computers, not cars but I'm hoping to change that.

Appreciate the help guys.

I stand corrected! I should have known anything that has to do with "liquids" you would know!
