Default trans shift past second gear, 1rst-3rd

need some trans info if at all possible thanks...
I own a 2000 Durango RT with 105K on it LOVE the truck, hate the milage blah blah...
trans one day decided that it didnt want to shift into second and has since ignored second all together. Shifts from first to third and back again no problem and I have actually continued to drive it for almost a 1000k with, get this, an improvement im my gas milage. No joke, used to get 10 driving around town now get 11....... hmm....its tru.
anyhow I taled to a buddy at the shop and he mentioned something about the second gear piston seal comming unseated(question mark)
the comp has produced no codes and fluid is clean and unburnt (was serviced 20k ago, no band adj.)
does this sound correct to anyone and is there a fix aside from replacement.
any help would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers

Welcome to DF
First you need to do a line pressure ck for 2nd gear. Could be a piston seal or band adjustment to loose, or throttle pressure cable. Most of the times, these transmissions have a long delay into 3rd gear, when there is a seal problem.

Any trans service on your setup should have ALWAYS included a band adjustment. Wondering why it was skipped.

Stop driving. Repair is literally $1000s less than replacement.

Have it properly serviced... AT A DIFFERENT PLACE than stupidly skipped the band adjust the last time. Swap fluid, swap filter, pray.

TY for your time and consideration, I have scanned through the forum as a guest pretty much since I bought it, looking for the usual tips and tricks, but only have had this major problem since I bought it 5 years ago so here I am.
On your reply, it does have quite a delay shifting into third but had somewhat dismissed this as my father said his dodge truck had always done the same. (it still pulls well)ce la vie
I am not too concerned about it going as I intend to keep this truck adn will pull the tranny myself and have it beefed up so that my patched up rig doesnèt blow a gasket somewhere in the mountains.......
any suggestions perhaps regarding a kit

thanks again

+1 guys!

If you rebuild let me recommend Transgo Shift Kits.

Default TY

TY for your time, sounds like its the seal and will have too pull it and send it off for a beef up.
yup that was me that skipped the band adjustment, was a rushed job to change the filter and fluid before heading out for a fishing trip...
and had apparently been serviced by the dealer at the end of extened warranty. Not sure about this as the competence level of the place I delt with (biggest dodge dealership around in major city) was pathetic....
eg. three 250k return trips to dealership regarding a miss under load at low rpm failed to rectify the problem until I got under the hood and quickly found a faulty lead that had disintigrated at the distributor....unreal
oh well time to build a proper tranny....
is there anything regarding build specs that might help fuell economysrry no question mark on this comp..
or somehting that would ease the hard hard down shifts
again any help would be great

cheers

Hard shifts could be the transmission output sensor gone out or adjustment issues.

If you pull the trans and rebuild, swap out the Torque Convertor for a NEW oversized one. Don't use rebuild TC's.

Same thing happened to my tranny, it turned out that the ban actually broke. All I can say is that you better fix it before it gets worse because I had to get a new transmission due to that.
