Default 180 deg t-stat on 4.7 ltr

quick question.

who makes a 180 degree thermostat for the 4.7 ltr motor? does a 180 t-stat from another motor work in here?

does napa, autozone, or advanced sell them? i looked at their websites but did not see a 180 for the 4.7 ltr.

i want to replace when i am changing my fluid this week.

NAPA sells one I know. But either way you can go with a 195 is you want.

I know that a lot of people are using the 180 thermostat to try to get more power out of the 4.7. The only thing I can say about it is that if your electric fan motor is set to come on at around 210-220 degrees, wouldn't that just make your t-stat stay open and become useless?

4.7s should use 195s BTW. Best to use a stocker stat in fact.

Techinally, the T-stat will open at 180 which means the truck should run around 185. Now the fan is a axillary fan and not a primary. The primary is a clutch fan and should keep it cool and let it run at the 185 region upon normal usage. If in fact the motor ever gets hotter and the T-stat is open all the way and the clutch fan can't keep up then at 210 the electric fan will kick on.

The truck should run at 185 as normal.

Now as Indy suggests, this has been a conversational topic on the 4.7L but not the 5.2L and 5.9L motors. Is it going to hurt, no, but it can be done. Do you have anything to add Indy on why you stated to use the OEM 195 F T-stat other than it being stock and for emissions?

Hell, we all know the two biggest forms of deterioration of motors is heat and lubrication right? So lower the heat and add a good Fully Synthetic 10W-30 oil for the ware.

When an aftermarket stat-enabled 4.7l overheats because it can't be burped properly... a stocker stat and re-burp solves it.

No aftermarket stat maker has improved on Dodge's original 4.7l design. Remember, there is a VERY important weep hole in that stat that is at play on the lil' guys verses the 40 year old simple stats we run on the old big 5.xL iron.

Well the big 5.+ motors have the weep holes or no weep hole. Depends on where you buy them.

I forgot about all the overheats on the 4.7L so thanks for the jog of the memory. So I would agree with a OEM replacement from the dealer.

ok i will go to the dealer to get a t-stat.

i have owned this truck for about a year, and dont remember if i had it last summer or not, but the truck is starting to get past the half way point on the gauge.

do the 4.7 have overheating issues?

on my list to do this week is oil change, t-stat and coolant change, tranny fluid and filters with a transgo shift kit.

i need to find a way to bring the temps down for just daily driving, because i will not be able to tow with the temp sitting over the half way point.

Well hopefully a new T-stat and flush with new fluid will do it.

The 4.7L has issues only if you do not bleed the air out correctly when filling it. Also remember to replace your radiator cap and fill your overflow bottle. THe last thing you want is to get that motor too hot! This is because it has aluminum heads and if you overheat it they will take out the head gasket so keep it cool! You might need a new clutch fan or new radiator?
