R/T- Interesting find without Towing Package?
Okay, so I bought a 2001 R/T this month and am pleased as punch because I've always wanted the R/T for all its extra "goodies." I really like the redesign of the interior from the 98-00 version and thought Dodge did a pretty good job with the inside.
So I got my first lookover today when I brought it home and noticed something unusual, atleast for me, because I thought the R/T had everything, every option (except video/cd changer). Okay, so I open the hood and am inspecting the front of the truck and see the radiator but no auxillary transmission cooler? Puzzled, I go to the back of the Durango and sure enough, it's got the towing OEM towing hitch attached to the truck. So I thought if it had the towing hitch, it meant it had the towing package?
The Durango actually had the original window sticker in the glovebox, which I thought was pretty neat, and hard to imagine this truck cost over $37,000 new. Anyway, I glanced over the sticker and no where does it say the trailer tow package.
So my question is- was this not part of the R/T package and had to be ordered seperately? Also, does the the trailer hitch in the back not mean it has the towing package?
I've got some pictures I'll be posting soon.

looks like you have the small mirrors too, seems to me like the P.O. purchased the R/T w/o the tow package and just added the OEM hitch reciever
while the R/T package commonly came with the tow package i dont think it was a part of it (the R/Ts were bought by many as a tow vehicle bc of the bigger 5.9l v8, and i believe the R/T got a different tune than the regular 5.9)

There should be an aux fan behind the radiator on the engine side. You will see the regular fan and there should be a little electronic fan next to it.
This photo is the A/C Condenser, the black one is the radiator behind it:

Next thing you can do is pull the cover off the PDC in the engine bay and see if it has the tow relays?

The tow package was not standard on any of the Durangos as far as I know. My 2001 SLT had it. You get the hitch, factory wiring, 160 amp alternator, and tranny cooler.
Also, unlike Ford and GM which usually include a shorter axle ratio and even a limited slip carrier for the rear axle, Chrysler did not.
The 3.92 gear ratio was a stand alone option independent of the tow package. It was also standard along with Anti-Spin (limited slip) on the R/T.

Incorrect.
The Limited Slip was available on all Durangos not just the R/T.
The Alternator is a 136 amp which I which I'm sure was standard.
The gearing that you could get in the 9.25" Chrysler Corporate rear end was avalibe in 3.92 Limited Slip or Open. Also you could get the 3.55's but not in Limited Slip. The 8.25" Chrysler Corporate rear end only came in 3.55 (from what I understand) but the Service Manual states that it could come in a Limited Slip version, however I have not seen one or heard of somebody having it?
Yes, the R/T was standard for a Limited Slip 9.25" Chrysler Corporate as you stated. Also the Tow Package (was NOT standard) as you indicated and was an add on, also it came with a Heavy Duty cooling system and all relays including bake controller interface harness under the dash.

That is probably a dealer add-on hitch Thom because that does appear to be an OEM hitch.
If it came with the tow package, it would have said so on the sheet. Doesn't? Then it didn't.
HS, no special tune for R/Ts after 2000. Same as any other 5.9.
Different muffler and different shocks? Yes. Different tune? Nope.

Is that the reason that the 2001-2003 didn't need 91 octane requirements as they did in the 2000's only?
