98 Durango tranny ?'s
Hello, first of all I'm the new guy here however I've owned Dodges all my life. Here's my problem; My wife is up in Roseburg Oregon and I'm here in Reno Nevada. Our 1998 Durango SLT threw on the check engine light yesterday and was having some serious power issues. She took it to a very close family friend (also a mechanic) and he ran the code. It came back telling us that the "C" sensor in the transmission is bad, not allowing it to start out in first gear (automatic).
Now, it did this a few years ago and it was the sensor on the drivers side, toward the rear of the transmission on the outside of the case. I'm wondering if this is the same sensor or a different one.
The truck has a 5.2 (318), automatic transmission, 4x4, with 189,000 miles on it.
Second question is; if I cannot get the sensor replaced before she leaves Roseburg, she's due to leave in about 36 hours, can she drive it back to Reno manually shifting it? The last time this issue came up, the part was out of stock at the local parts house and I had to drive it for 3 days manually shifting it and it seemed to work fine with no side effects for the tranny.
Thanks,
Sean
PS, When the mechanic took it out for a drive, he did the manual shifting and everything seemed to work fine. All the power problems went away.

OK, rather than start a new thread, I'll ask my questions here.
1) How do I positively Identify which transmission is in my Durango. I want to say its either a 44RE or a 46RE, but I need to make a positive ID.
2) How hard are these to rebuild. I don't mean getting it out and taking it to the shop, I mean an actual tear down and overhaul. Anything "tricky" I need to be forewarned about?
I've rebuilt several 727's for various applications and even did a 904 once. All of those transmissions went 100K+ miles so I must have done a good job. I'm not afraid to do my own work. I've rebuilt BB / SB engines, Auto transmissions, T-cases, even a differential or two, so no I'm not afraid of getting dirty.
Is this something i should even attempt?

If you have a 5.9L you have a 46RE in a 1998.
If you have a 5.2L you will have a 42-44RE in a 1998.
Concitering yours is a 5.2L you have the 42-44RE.
Look in here https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...wers-faqs.html under 46RE Transmissions and there are a lot of simalarities.
