Unhappy Wont start in Park but will start in N, Also has a hard time shifting into 2nd

Our durango suddenly wont start in Park, but will start in Neutral. It also has a hard time shifting into 2nd gear but will shift eventually. I have to drive it very slowly (as to not raise the RPM's to high- it will go up to 3G+ before shifting if I dont drive slow enough).
My husband has the part to replace the N switch. But I saw on here ib 2006/2007 a guy had the same issues (minus the 2nd gear issue) and he in the end discovered after replacing the N switch and changing the linkage that the gears were not on spot with the Orange that shows to put the shifter in N so it was a little off (Mine as well) When he readjusted the linkage the gears were a COMPLETE gear off! So I dont think I want to mess with the linkage (I will have my huband look it of course). However in the end that ended up not being the issues with this guys truck, so it might not be whats wrong with mine. He figured out in his last post he made that he was looking at a rebuild instead of fixing his trany due to the front band anchor? Does anyone know anything about this?

Welcome to DF
I'm guessing on the year and engine size. 4.7L with a 45RFE trans, cable adjustment or the transmission shifter lever on the transmission is loose. 5.2/5.9L safety neutral switch or the shifter linkage is out of adjustment or loose. Either way the problem maybe under the truck.

Just for training purposes, MS. Just how DO you adjust the cable linkage on a 4.7?

No they shouldn't have. Most likely it is a 1998-1999 model.

There is an adjustment for the orange indicator under the dash on the driver’s side. It should be tied to the support bracket and is while plastic in color. It is small and has a small round adjustment **** on it. You can adjust the orange indicator to match your gearing.

With that said, your Neutral Safety switch should be on the drivers side by the linkage going into the transmission. There is also an adjustment there for the transmission. I would first replace the switch.
