Default durango transmission bands

ok i have a 98 5.2 durrango and there days everytimg is normal and then there are days everything is wacked.(late shifting).i want to get my bands serviced hoping this is the problem but the problem is finding a decent mechanic.i called a shop and he said that he really doesnt like to retighten the bands cause the problem always leads into something else.he would rather rebuild the transmission.i told him yea right.tighten the bands is just maintance to the transmission that you need to do so often.that he was only trying to take a job that would cost a little over 100 bucks and turn it into a 2000+ job. my qustion when i call other shops what kinda stuff should i look for also what questions to ask. thanks for ALL FUTURE ADVICE.

I had the same problem finding a transmission shop willing to do what I wanted. Everyone wants to flush and ignore the bands. Most of them treated me like an idiot when said don't flush. You need to find someone that can refer you to a good shop. I found a really good one here in Indianapolis, thanks to IndyDurango.

the tv cable is what tells the transmission how hard you are on the gas, and lets it 'decide' if you need to downshift into passing gear.

You are a smart person that reads up on what he is doing. That shop wanted to take you for a ride.....LOL

Anyway, replace fluid, filter, and adjust bands. Make sure you ONLY use ATF+4 fluid. Shops like to use cheap multi-vehicle fluid. Don't do it!

Here the problem you will find in all shops. They would rather do a flush, like the other members stated. The craftmanship is all but gone in all dealerships and transmission shops. There only a few transmission techs that will adjust the transmission bands, just when doing a filter change. Here is how i adjust the bands. With pan off and replace the filter, If the front band and rear band needs adjustments. I don't use a torque wrench, I adjust the bands to a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of freeplay. If you need the information how check or ajdust the kick down cable, let either me know or any of the other members.

So is that a 1/4 - 1/2 inch loop at the bottom of the band to the clutch?

Do you pull the band down away from the clutch while measuring this?

I measure the amount of freeplay from the actulator piston that applys the arms for the bands. Here what i'll do next time i adjust the bands. I'll use a feeler gauge and then post my finding.
