Default Linkage disconnected from shifter???

Help Please!

2000 Dodge Durango 4x4

When shifting from 4WD to 2WD, it was giving me a little trouble but then suddenly popped free and is now a loose, floating shifter. While on a slight incline and in Park, the Durango will roll back. I'm guessing this means it was between 4WD and 2WD when it came loose and is still there. Now, I'll admit I don't know much about cars but I went underneath and found the arm that the shifter above is connected to. When I push or pull it, the shifter moves above. However, there is another little arm connected to this and that is connected to nothing.. so there's the problem right? My question: What does that connect to? I was hoping I could put it in to 2wd from under the car so I can at least move it. Then I can put it on some ramps and try to reconnect it.

I found a similar problem here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...d-linkage.html BUT it doesn't say how to put it back in to 2WD and I'm not sure if this is my same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

you should be able to slide the t-case selector into 2wd it sounds to me like you need a new bushing which holds the arm to selector on the t-case

That's what I'm hoping. My problem is I don't see where the arm connected to before it came loose so I don't know what to push (or the direction) to put it back in to 2WD. Would it need to be in neutral?

this is the diagram from the factory service manual available for download in the FAQ thread at the top of the page, if 2wd is all the way forward then move the lever on the t-case all the way towards the rear of the vehicle. take a look at the diagram and you should be able to figure it out

Thank you for the diagram. That helps a lot. I think the shift rod is what I'm seeing dangling from under the car. On the diagram it looks like it is supposed to be connected to the range lever on the transfer case. I'm assuming this is where I push/pull to actually put the car in 2WD? 2WD is actually 2nd from the bottom (bottom being towards the rear of the vehicle) so I'll need to pull the range lever all the way towards the front of the car, then back one? Just making sure I don't mess up anything!

Thanks again

Also, any ideas on how to get the part numbers for these bushings? I think I'm gonna try to do this myself

idk about the part number for the bushings, but yes you seem to have the right idea on how to shift it manually, although you could also just pop the shift linkage back in, and have someone shift it from inside (or at least put the inside in 2wd so you can use the linkage to gauge where you need to stop)

N0, You will have to set the emergency brake and chock the wheels because it can roll.

By design it appears that the shifter should be all the way forward in the cab (2wd) and the linkage on the T-case should be all the way backward for 2wd.

Now you will need to find a new bushing. Most people find them in a junk yard as I think the bushing is out of production from the dealer. You could make a new
Polyurethane bushing but I have not yet done this however the meassurements are here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...age-issue.html
