Muffler Offsets
Indeed, in fact at that age I thought the same thing, I thought I was hot s**t for my 82 Ram with a 3.7L Slant 6, straight piped. This was short lived until I had some dude pull a gun on me on my way to school driving thru a neighborhood.
There's a very bold line between poppy loud and performance loud. My truck (5.9 with 3" cat back/Flowmaster 40 muffler) is much louder than stock, but sounds great.

If you're referring to my Durango, nope. I got Mopar Performance Kegged Intake, complete MSD Ignition system, 8.5mm MSD plug wires, 46re "Viper" rebuilt transmission, 52mm FastMan TB, SuperChips modded computer, Mopar Performance valve heads, and flat top pistons bored 30 over.
It's my little toy.

Except for me, I've spent more hours under the hood and under the body than I can count. It's fun because I bought it brand new from the dealer with 2 miles on it. It's now going on 125,xxx and still original motor (my upgrades) and still original transmission (rebuilt voluntarily due to upgrades).
If you treat your truck right like you should, don't be surprised when you run it until the wheels fall off.
Be sure that little bitty muffler isn't restrictive enough, you always want a little bit of back pressure to keep the engine healthy.
If it's too open you will also suffer poor gas mileage. Just my .02
