Engine noise
Hi Guys, I've got a 03 D w 4wd. It's been overheating the last few days after a trip to Vegas. After I got it home, the engine refused to start, when it did, it diesled until it died, now it seems like the engine timing is off, it sputters and the whole engine shakes. Some help from the forum community would greatly be appreciated. Thanks a bunch
I'm also looking for the areas to look for timing marks and what cylinder should be used to make certain my timing is correct?

My Demon 'diesles' once in a while and the engine builder told me that it is idling too fast. I am not sure if this is what is causing your problem,

Looks like a trip to the mechanics shop according to this link:

WHat engines does your Durango have? 4.7 or 5.9? How many miles on it?
Don't worry too much about timing, as it is set by the computer. You cannot change it.
When was the last time you had the cooling system serviced?

On these engines timing is calculated by advancing/retarding timing at the distributor by rotating it. There is a mark on the front o the engine and is measured with cylinder 1 (Driver side Front Cylinder).
Borrow a timing gun if you wanna check it out but theres a plethora of problems it could be other than timing.
I'd get it checked out by a mechanic to ensure fuel pump is alright and plugs are igniting if you're not well knowledgable under the hood.
If he has a 5.9, WRONG!

UPDATE: I got it scanned at a shop and the guys said my D has 'two dead cylinders and needs a new engine for $5500, want me to get right on that?" (yeah like i have nothing better than to drop $5500 on...
I asked about compression test and the diagnostic as to which two coils are bad, he was evasive and kept pushing the 'used engine' swap instead. SunDevil auto in the valley, i tell ya...

You still have not answered the question of which engine you have. At least not directly.
You commented about "which two coils" which leads me to think 4.7L engine. The 5.9 has one coil and a distributor whereas the 4.7L has no distributor and one coil per plug.

Just how old are you? Seems you can't make a constructive comment without sounding like an arrogant teenager. Should you look around the many Dodge/Chrysler forums here on the net, you will see that most of the time I know what I am talking about.
I also know how to "politely" let someone know they might be misinformed. Something you might want to consider if you plan on having many folks pay any attention to what you post.
