If you can still shift into D, 2, 1 then it sounds like your cable slipped somewhere. I think the only way to start it in D is if you bypassed the neutral safty switch somehow. If you got under and took the cable off and tried putting it in Park from the transmission side and it didn't go in, either you didn't give it enough force or something is jamming it inside the transmission.

Also what motor are we talking about here, do you have the 4.7L or 5.9L?

So you have the 46re tranny. Try disconnecting your shifter cable from the transmission side and while holding it next to where it connects to the transmission, have someone move the shifter all the way from park down to 1 and if the cable travels much longer than it should or pulls back into the cable housing all the way and hits the end causing the shifter to stop before it could reach park or 1 then it's a misadjusted cable. Also make sure that on the transmission the cable linkage will go from park to 1, something may have jamming inside the transmission causing the cable to slip or stretch somewhere.

Replace the transmission Gear shift cable. Then adjust the cable.

2003 5.9L 46RE

ADJUSTMENTS GEARSHIFT CABLE

Check adjustment by starting the engine in PARK
and NEUTRAL. Adjustment is CORRECT if the
engine starts only in these positions. Adjustment is
INCORRECT if the engine starts in one but not both
positions. If the engine starts in any position other
than PARK or NEUTRAL, or if the engine will not
start at all, the transmission range sensor may be
faulty.
Gearshift Adjustment Procedure
(1) Shift transmission into PARK.
(2) Release cable adjuster lock tab (underneath the
steering column) (Fig. 112) to unlock cable.
(3) Raise vehicle.
(4) Disengage the cable eyelet from the transmission
manual shift lever.
(5) Verify transmission shift lever is in PARK
detent by moving lever fully rearward. Last rearward
detent is PARK position.
(6) Verify positive engagement of transmission
park lock by attempting to rotate propeller shaft.
Shaft will not rotate when park lock is engaged.
(7) Snap the cable eyelet onto the transmission
manual shift lever.
(8) Lower vehicle.
(9) Lock shift cable by pressing cable adjuster lock
tab downward until it snaps into place.
(10) Check engine starting. Engine should start
only in PARK and NEUTRAL

he's the master at stuff like this haha. If you still have problems after doing all that, see if the cable adjustment is slipping out of place because of applying too much force on the shifter, or what the original cause of the problem was as it might occur again.

Hello,

I was hoping that you may be able to help me. I bought my son a 2003 Durango 5.9L 4x4.

I also cannot get into PARK and followed the directions above.

I followed your directions here https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...rans-help.html

I have the fluid pan off the bottom of transmission as I was going to change the fluid and filter.

I removed the cable/rod eyelet from the manual shift lever on the external side of the transmission. I can manipulate the external lever on the outside of the trans case and see the internal lever moving at the same time.

My problem is:
I can manuver the external shift lever all the way down to first, but when I try to shift back to park it seems the rod that is INSIDE the transmission, attached to the internal shift lever, will not go far enough to get on the Park hump of the internal lever. I have tried gently prying the internal lever to try and edge the lever to the park hump position but it seems something inside is stopping the internal rod.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thank You,
Rick

Sounds like the end of the park rod may have snapped off in side the transmission. To may sure that is what happen, you need to remove the valve body. Or if you have a transfer box, make sure its not in neutral.

Thank you for the fast reply.

The transfer case electronic **** on the dash will not go down to the nuetral position. It will go into AWD, 4HI, 4LO positions.
I manually positioned the internal shift lever inside the trans into nuetral. Then when we moved electronic **** from AWD to 4HI and 4LO it sounded like the solenoid was having trouble shifting around.

Can the solenoid be bound and blocking the internal rod from allowing us to put the internal shift lever into park position?

Is there a trick to dropping valve body, or is it a straight forward unbolt and drop?

I also noticed on the external side of the transmission:
There is a second rod above the manual external shift lever that activates a small indent inside the trans when I physically move that external secondary rod.

Thanks Again,
Rick
