It sounds like it's either time for a band adjustment and check the 1-2 shift solenoid.

Is the fluid alright? (normal color and proper level reading)

thanks for the reply whitewidow, i did check fluid looked ok as far as level, can't say much for color, i thought it didn't look like a nice red color thought it looked sort of dark red.

if it isn't the fluid, is the band adjustment and solenoid replacement something i could do in my garage on jack stands?

Thanks

also i would consider checking the output speed sensor on the tailshaft of the transmission, when mine went bad in my old truck the 1-2 shift was very very late

I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have any experience with it, I don't even trust myself with my own transmission with the exception of changing fluid and filters. I'd take it to a shop and have someone experienced do it, but that's just me.

Also, shrp gave good advice and that could very well be it.

For more information I'm going to give you the link to the transmission diagnostic page, which you can find lots of information and possibly your answer (first link) and also a link with instructions on adjusting the bands in your transmission (second link). Hope they help!

is this sensor on the outside of the tranny, or does it have to be accessed inside the transmission.

Outside of the transmission near the back on the tailshaft.

Since you say the fluid is a dark red color though, I'd start there as this could be the quick fix problem solver.

Thanks for the input, will try the fluid first. I am not very well informed on automatic transmissions, but I have taken on challenges in the past (did a complete R&R on manual transmission on 2000 volks jetta and worked out great)

I am assuming that I will need to drop the transmission pan, and is there a filter there i should replace also.

Yep and 2 filters in there, get them from a dealership for your best bet. Also put nothing but ATF +4 in it. If it's something else you're likely to run into problems. ATF +4 is ATF +4 and all of them are synthetic so whatever brand you choose will work.

You can look in the DIY section or the transmission section I gave you or search it for more instructions. It's not really too bad of a task to do yourself.

I just had the same problem with my 2000 D with 5.9.
Dropped the pan replace the filter and adjusted both bands.
I think the front band out of adjustment was my problem.
good luck with it.
PS The trans shifted fine cold and would have a delayed shift after it warmed up.
