Default 2000 4.7 rough idle 11.4 city 13.5 highway mpg 104k miles

Having a problem with my durango, the truck will randomly have a rough idle where i can hear random popping in the exhaust. I just changed the spark plugs AGAIN but this time i used bosch platimun gapped at .040. I cleaned out the iac and the port where it plugs into. Airfilter is new. Check engine light is off. When i turn the ac on the idle will come up and it will idle nice and smooth. Does anyone have any clue what this might be or what i can try next? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

The wise ones here will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe our trucks run better on the cheap autolite and champion plugs. Your could also be experiencing an O2 sensor going out. I have the cheap autolites in mine and it runs beautiful.

+1 Mastec... No platinums!!! they will give you more problems. Also, I agree with the O2 sensor. Your pre cat sensor may be bad causing you to run rich. The popping is from unburned fuel in the exhaust.

Change those platinum plugs with some cheap Champion Copper gapped to .040 and you will be good to go. Basically what is happening is the plugs are too cold of a plug and causing it to have a low stumble and once the A/C is kicked on and bumps up the RPM's a little bit, it evens out.

I have suspect that the O2 sensor is fine for the time being and I would hold off on that for now and just do the plugs. The engine isn't made to run on Platinum and honestly those plugs are made for like a Nissan or Honda performance engine and not a truck. I believe the plugs will burn the fuel evenly and not cause backfire in the exhaust from excessive fuel due to running rich.

Widow, I think this is the 2nd time to replace the plugs. That's why I thought the O2
may be an issue.
Widow is right, change to the correct plugs first to see if it fixes the problem before you waste money on a new o2 sensor.

Well they factory has Cheap Champion Copper spark plugs in it and they will always work. Using the cheap Autolite Copper plugs will work in some motors, but will not work in others (Personally seen them not even start!) and all the way to blowing motors.

There is in no way in hell I will run Autolite plugs, but each to their own.

Regardless, DO NOT use ANY type of Platinum plugs!

Anyway, I would clean the TB, and IAC. Then replace the spark plugs with Champion Copper and reset the PCM.

this is your problem, as stated above these trucks do NOT run well with any platinum plug in them, replace with the champion copper core plugs gapped to .040

I am on my third set of Autolite plugs (change once a year) since buying it 3 years ago. The Durango had Autolites (Dealer tune-up) when I bought it so I replaced with the same. Has not failed me yet, even at -25º during Illinois winters.

Interesting you state a dealership put Autolites in your truck because Mopar uses Champion for anything and everything. Even on the SRT-4 Neon we use Champion Platinum.
