Spark Knock?
Well i haven't noticed the ticking sound. but i havent been listening for it since i have other problems. But when i ran seafoam through my brake booster cable i and did as the instructions said i did not get big clouds of smoke through my exhaust
My Ram didn't smoke either so don't worry about it.
Have you tried a better octane, like the next one up? Or a different name brand? When I am trying to nail down a problem like this I get a full tank of Chevron Premium and go from there.

I haven't tried upping the octane yet. Just the lucas fuel injector cleaner and seafoam. Guess I've been more preoccupied with the over heating situation. but there is no local Chevron or BP around here. mostly super America's and holidays. I'll try to get to a BP and try upping to the highest octane. or at least to 89 from 87.
Than once that tank is empty I'll report back. though i did have my head under the hood today and i didn't here the ticking sound. So maybe or maybe not? though with the engine overheating that might have had something to do with it. Sense the whole idea of higher octanes and seafoam and such is to create the chemical situation where the temperature of the combustion is higher and the higher heat helps clean the cylinders. though that is to an extent.

The reason that I say to get a higher octane is for engine ping. That might be what you are hearing. The higher the octane the slower the burn and more complete burn. Thus this reaction slows the power stroke timing by a fraction of a second.
Since the engine actually detonates at various timing but all Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) ping is the sound of the power stroke at full combustion but the piston isn't at TDC yet so some of the force is transferred down the lifters into the wrist and rod bearings. However, if a octane is to low the timing is fine, however the combustion is too early as shown. So you use a slightly higher octane to "Slow" the burn slightly thus retarding the timing ever so slightly so the piston is in the correct position and timing.
As for Lucas and Seafoam, or any types of the various additives are not regulated so they can say anything as long as the product "kind of works" so as not to miss lead. But since they don't have a stringent rules or government mandates (just like herbs) they can put anything into it and sell it to you for thousands. buyer-be-wear. I don't like them, I don't like the use of them, and I really don't ever use them. However, if I am going to use one I use Seafoam as it has worked somewhat at least for me.
So as for claims of hot burning in the cylinders or blowing stuff out, there might be some truth to it, but I would think it's more of a chemical cleanser.

Nice explanation hydra. And yeah, what you explained is what i mean. I'll fill up a higher octane and see how she runs with that. I'm trying to not drive her as much at the current moment.
I don't know if all that is happening is somehow connected? Hearing the ping/knock and the engine keeps over heating which i think is either she keeps getting air into the system or she's just never been burped right.
I'll post back in a week or so after filling up a higher octane. most likely from Super America or Holiday since those are the only two stations around that and mobile. She is empty right now. Gas lights been on for a few miles.
I might run the highest octane 91 or 92 depending on what they have.

BP and ARCO are the same company they only use a nine step process when filtering there gas Chevron,QT,Shell,Mobil use a 12 step process with only doing nine steps there gas clogs injectors and filters
iv never had a problem with BP gas, and have never heard of anyone having a problem, granted most of the time iv been buying hess bc they are the cheapest name brand gas around, but you have to keep in mind that there are only a few suppliers for all of the gas stations and BP is one of them iirc
Yeah, I've never heard of any complaints. I've always heard places like BP were good.
I'll most likely fill up at Super America. Its most convenient to me. The BP is kind of out there for me. not very far only like 5-7 miles only 2 miles from work but its in a place and direction i rarely go.
