Default AC Compressor started tapping

Whenever the AC is on, the compressor makes a constant tapping noise. This afternoon on my way home from work I noticed the AC will only blow cold if Im accelerating and blows almost warm when stopped at a light. What is everyones thoughts? Recharge? Clutch in the compressor?

Thanks!

Is your electric fan coming on? If not, your ac won't cool while the truck is stopped. The air flow is needed to cool he condensor coils.

Im not sure, I havent noticed. When the AC is on, will the fan run all the time? What would cause it to NOT come on?

Yes, it should run if the ac is on. It could stop working if the motor is fried or it could be the relay.

just shine a flashlight in there w/ the engine running and the a/c on, it should be spinning, if not do this
1) swap the e-fan relay with a matching number, if that doesnt work
2) check the fuse (should be labeled in the lid of the PDC)
3) jumpt 12v to the fan leads directly (you can use the battery, but i would use a charger if you have one just in case. . .) if this doesnt work you need a new e-fan

Sounds like a bad electric fan then.

I agree it sounds like a bad electric fan. Also, if the tapping presists, try and use a stethoscope to isolate the tapping noise and if you fine it's coming from the compressor, I fear you have a near dead clutch.

OK problem solved. Turns out its hard to see the fans running Without a light on them. (Dark Garage). So we tested the pressure in the lines. Low Refrigerant. Put a can in til it read around 44. Now my air is ICE COLD! I tend to overlook the obvious, always done that my entire life.
