Default 2000 Dodge Durango problems

Hello I just bought my first Durango. I payed $1950 for it and it has 132,000 miles with the 5.9 engine. The truck has quite a few problems and I'm hoping someone on here has encountered some of these problems and could tell me some tips or tricks on this to fix it.

1. The biggest problem it has is the brakes. They go probably 3/4's of the way to the floor before they decide to work. I'm guessing its maybe the master cylinder? Also the brake and ABS lights are on. There doesn't seem to be any fluids leaking so I doubt its a busted line plus the fluid level never goes down.

2. Another problem that is really starting to have me worried is when I turn the fan selector to A/C the wipers come on for 3 or 4 swipes. It also does this when the turn signals are turned on. But when I turn the wipers on the normal way they don't work until you get through the intermittent part of the selector.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions. If it would be easier you can also e-mail me at gagnejoe88@yahoo.com

re #2: Probable multi-function stalk failure. Or the clockspring is failing.

for the brakes i suggest that you check the pad thats left, and if there is plenty left then i would start by bleeding the brakes.

brake and abs lights being on is the rear wheel speed sensor 90% of the time, its on top of the rear differential.

If I plugged a code reader into the vehicle will it show me which ABS sensor isn't working right?

ABS light will also go on if air has gotten into the system due to a leak. The dealer has to bleed the ABS module & reset the code. Given that you have a soft pedal now, I'd look closely at bleeding the brakes first to see if the pedal comes back up. (provided that the pads aren't completely worn out and a piston is at the end of it's travel that is).

I don't think the ABS codes will read out on a standard (home) OBD reader.

Also when you replace the rear speed sensor replace the cable harness that's with it. I replaced mine shortly after I bought my D and the harness was what kept my lights on.

If the rear brakes aren't adjusting and worn your petal will go down quite a ways so look there as well. Personally I would take it to a shop.

My dad has been a mechanic for 40 years so i'll let him try to figure it out before I bring it to a shop. Thank you for all the replies by the way. One other problem that my Durango has that i forgot to mention is the rear hatch is locked and it won't unlock when i use the power lock button of use the key to manually unlock it. I see that there isn't a level inside of the vehicle to open the hatch so i'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

take the plastic off and see if the power lock solenoid is actuating when you hit the lock button, if not make sure its getting power, and if it is getting power replace it.

if it is getting power check the FAQ thread, i did a write up on how to fix a sticky lock in the rear hatch (mine would take 3-5 or sometimes more unlock attempts with the power locks to unlock the hatch, i was able to fix it for nothing)
