Default Slip Yoke ATF leak help!?

Hello all. First off my vehicle in question is a 1999 5.2 with 160,000 miles and I am having issues with an ATF leak. We replaced the output shaft seal and bushing thinking that was the problem but now we realize that it is leaking from the slip yoke itself. So the question: Is there a seal in the slip yoke itself that can be replaced? If so what is the seal called? Rear pinion?

What it is doing is leaking from the middle of the slip yoke, accumulating on the u joint where the yoke attaches to the drive shaft, and then flinging ATF all over the under carriage while also leaving small drip spots on the driveway.

I don't want to keep having to check the transfer case fluid level and worrying about burning it up!

Hmmm 38 views, no replies....alright then. I might just replace the yoke itself cause it's only 100 bucks for the part. Now should I replace the ujoint as well when replacing the yoke? Anything else I should replace when putting a new yoke on?

First let me ask you a question. Are you talking about the output shaft on the transfer case to the rear drive line?

If so then on the transfer case output shaft housing has 2 seals, however they are built into 1 seal. There is an inner lip seal, and an outer dirt seal. The inner is supposed to help against leakage and wraps around the slip yoke. Replace the seal:

Thanks for the reply. Yes I am referring to the output shaft on the transfer case. I replaced that seal with the oem part.

It's not leaking around the yoke but coming from the center of it, like there is a metal cap or seal on the end of the yoke itself that is bad. The tailshaft housing is dry, the dust boot is dry, and the outside of the yoke that slides into the case itself is dry. Just a decent leak coming from the center of the yoke. Would a bad output shaft seal cause this problem still? I would try another seal before replacing the yoke itself.

Here is what it looks like. If I slide my finger between that ujoint and the end of the slip yoke, it is all wet with ATF.

Well after some research I guess there is a welch plug on the sleeve yoke itself. I'm pretty sure that's the culprit. Now I gotta figure out how to approach this....maybe JBweld it or something. Thanks for the help Hydro but I know for sure it's not that seal.

99boss hog - My son just bought a used 2005 dodge ram 1500 2WD and we have the exact same issue. Thanks for the post. Did you end up fixing the ATF leak? If so, how? Any feedback is appreciated.

replacing the slip yolk will fix it. I haven't tried any other method. I don't want come backs so I replace the slip yoke and ujoint if its old.
