1999 5.9 4x4
Good, thought maybe someone threw some Transfer Case in that didnt belong.
Going to pop up the rear hopefully today and investigate more where that humming sound is coming from. Drives me nuts.
In case, rebuild or replace?
I can get a rebuild case for $150 or a used transfer case for 300.
Is it possible to rebuild the case with 2 people in a couple of days?
Any extra presses needed or any 'not-common' tools?
If anybody has rebuild a Transfer case, please contact me.

I think in fact you have a NV231 Transfer case. Regardless you do not have a NV242 so the Part Time light will not illuminate. There is a circular ID tag is attached to the rear case of each transfer case. The ID tag provides the transfer case model number, assembly number, serial number, and low range ratio.
Could also be a bad U-Joint. Could be in the T-case, and if it is it would be easier to get a junker and install. Just get the same one.

rear is Limited slip, added some sort of additive before assembling.
Checked the Tag : 231 D
U-Joint...would make a bad humming sound if it goes bad?

I shift from 2H into any 4H or 4L the 4x4 Part-Time light comes on.
Last, would a NV242 fit?
Gonna replace the fluid now in the T-Case as it is pretty black...

Anyway, yes a bad U-Joint will have a vibration.
There is only 1 instrument cluster made for the 1998 and 1999 Durango. There was 2 different Transfer Cases made however. 1 of the cases is the NV242 and 1 case was the NV231. The NV242 has one more position and thus the reason that there is a second light in the cluster. PT and FT 4X4. Looks like I mixed up which light illuminates as I should have said the FT position.
With the NV231 it doesn't use the second light therefore the light bulb was not installed in the cluster, but the window was still there. This is out of the manual:
FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE INDICATOR LAMP
PART TIME
On vehicles with the optional part time four-wheel
drive transfer case (Model NV231), the Part Time
indicator lamp lights when the transfer case is
engaged in the 4H or 4L positions. On vehicles with
the optional full-time four-wheel drive transfer case
(Model NV242), the Part Time indicator lamp lights
when the transfer case is engaged in the 4 X 4 Part
Time or 4 Lo positions.
Also in the NV242 it also illuminates the 4X4 Full Time light in the FT position.

So, bought a 10 mm hex to undo the plugs, drained, used ATF+4 (barely a quart or a bit more). Checked the old fluid, no sparkles, no metals.
Adjusted the small level arm attached to the transfer case as I saw scratch marks and thought it must have moved.
Sure enough...2H, a slight move with a couple of fingers down and it is in 4H, exactly where it is supposed to be.
Sweet...4x4 issue resolved so easy.
Used WD40 on a couple of spots and the humming has gone down a bit. Now I know where to look closer.
