...I am just gonna pretend I didn't read your last post, have a quiet peaceful and worry-free dinner, watch TV, go to bed and have a great sleep and then in the morning I will pretend this is news to me and start freaking out.

(Hope it's NOT messing up what was done)

...and yes, I am planning to make this one of the longest running threads...with a LOAD of information for the absolute noob, like me.

Dont worry to much if you haven't been putting on miles as fast as you can, it will take time if that is the issue to undo the recent repairs. But having said that you want to get it fixed asap as with any issue.

Default Crush Sleeve

Aaaand I am back...

I think I am getting to the end of this thread...finally.

I had a mechanic come over, disconnected the drive-shaft from Differential, lifted the vehicle and as soon as he started to spin the rear tires...oh yeah...you could hear it knocking, popping and clunking.

Glad it's NOT the transfer case.

So...most likely it is the crush sleeve as the sound is emitting from close to where the differential meets the drive-shaft.

Question:
To get to the sleeve, does the whole differential need to be disassembled?

1999 Durango, 5.9, 4x4...any idea what size the sleeve is?
Seems there are two -> 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 Inch diameter?

Does the bearing under the sleeve have a certain name?

I want to get the parts in advance and make sure they are available.
Appreciate any help...again!

Mine has 12 bolts...I guess it is 9 1/4?
Saw it in the forums.

Yes the whole diff has to be disassembled. The bearing is called a pinion bearing, which as you described sounds like it is completely shot. You need to have some one who has worked on these diffs set the crush sleeve and the backlash (or in simple terms how much the drive shaft can wiggle when turning it by hand). Also if you have 12 bolts it is a 9 1/4. I would recommend not doing this by yourself without the proper supervision by someone with experience.

Default Cool

Ya, as I figured.

9 1/4 rear outer sells $31
9 1/4 rear inner sells $11
Crush Sleeve $ 5

...and yes...not gonna touch it at all. Gonna leave it to the mech who knows.

Still cheaper than a Transfer Case...harhar.

BTW, thanks for responding.
I learned and am learning a lot.

Any idea though how long this job should/could take?

Have a great day all...

An experienced person could take a whole day, an experienced person working on it a couple half days I could see also.

Is that necessary, she already had axel bearings done and had the lsd rebuilt. I agree that it would be the proper thing to do though. Especially if that pinion bearing put metal shavings into the gear lube.
