Thats for the update, So you would recommend the jeep TCM. So I guess you now have a 5th gear now.

Yes, I would recommend the 2002 jeep grand cherokee tcm. The wot shifts are at about 5400 vs the old 5200 ish, and the rpms are holding 1500 at like 60. The 2 to 3 mpgs I'm getting will hopefully pay for the 125 dollar part in no time. Like I said, the only downside is the 2nd O/D to 3rd shift for passing since the double second gear got replaced to accommodate the extra overdrive. And it does require a huge bit of throttle to hit the shift, and when it does it revs to 3k minimum. All in all it is a very good gaid with a little bit of sacrifice.

the 2nd prime (kickdown) is still there and is still used you just added a 2nd OD at .67:1

Engineers decided that instead of having six forward gears, it made sense to program the transmission to act as a five-speed with an alternate second gear for downshifts. So, for instance, cruising a healthy highway speed of 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE would yield a 2000 RPM, about 200 RPM less than the 45RFE programming, which means less fuel consumption.

the more I read about this the more I wish I had the $$$ around to get a durango that has the 5speed already or at least is capable of running the 5speed TCM without issues. durango's 2001-2003 dont seem very common around here and those I do find are stupid pricey, even comparing a 2000 to a 2001 the price increase is drastic

They already have the 5 speed, just not the computer to make use of it. And FWIW the newer durangos don't look very good and the brand new ones will have problems, just because they're new.

Yeah I think for the MPGs youll get, youd probably be better off with the 5.9.

No the 5.9l doesn't even come close for fuel economy, I was very happy when I average 15 highway mpg. Used to get 16 but then I went to a LT tire instead of the Passenger rated one that was on it cause that P rated was so easy to overload.

what is you city milage, mine is like 9-10, I have an uncle who usually get 18-20 highway and 15-16 city. His is a 02 slt 4.7l, 4wd, and he has bad alignment with the original tires (85k now). Maybe you need some O2 sensors?
