Default Which Exhaust?????

Okay so I know this is a question that gets asked a lot but I can only find solid info for guys with 5.9's. My question is what would sound best, a shop fabbed 3" pipe with 3.5" tip, a magnaflow or a flowmaster for my 4.7? I honestly don't want to spend $500 on a good Cat-Back system but will if thats the only way to get a good sound. I'm looking for something with a mild sound at idle, and a mean rumble at WOT. Any insight would me MUCH appreciated.

I would go to your local exhaust shop and have them make you up a single CAT-Back system. So from the "Y" pipe back hook you up with a 3" or at least 2 3/4" pipe and go to a Flowmaster 40 muffler. However the one thing I don't like about Flowmaster is they are not a straight flow through design hints the reason I mainly don't like them. They have baffles:

Now Magnaflow on the other hand is a straight through design, however they are not as loud. If you go to the smaller 18" version the sound is louder then the 20" and even softer at the 22" and finally the 24" series. Now they do have a 14" series but I would bet it would sound like a ricer and drone heavily, but who knows? Now I had an 18" on a 84 Bronco (biggest POS I ever owned!) with a 351 and it sounded very respectable. Loud with a good grunt, but not loud enough that the neighbor would want to shoot you, but you most likely will wake them up......LOL

You can completely see the difference in performance with a straight through design instead of baffled:

Here is the Magnaflow 24" I installed on my truck. Now it has dual inlet at 2.5" and single outlet at 3.5", but then again I have a V-10. But you can see the straight through design with no back pressure. It is also reversible:

Okay I see, but what would sound best with a 4.7? I don't want popping, and drone is not a want either, as I drive 60miles round trip to work everyday on a highway.

Well magnaflow doesn't drone where I have heard that flowmaster 40's do. Now I have also been told that the flowmaster 50 SUV series is the best for low drone and good grunt sound. Again I like Magnaflow and I like the design particular. But you said that you don't want to hear the pop yet you want it to be loud. You can't have both?

LOL

Well I would still say Magnaflow 18", but I have never heard a 4.7L. Maybe someone will chime in.

Lol, so heres a vid from a 2010 4.7 RAM with the 18" Magnaflow. Aside from the newer 4.7 making more power I would assume they would produce the same sound.

So I think Im going to have a shop fabbed 3" pipe and a 3.5" Tip, welded up to a 18" Magnaflow muffler.
