what do you do...
so i was thinkin the other day, and this may be a little off topic for the board, but i was thinkin it would be interesting to have a thread that everyone introduces themselves and what they do for a living. just to kinda get an idea of how diverse a set of knowledge we have here on the forum.
so if your comfortable doing it give a name, age and what you do for a living.
so here goes.
Im adam, im a security guard at the mall and am a registered emt-basic with advanced skills. in school to become a paramedic/firefighter.

My name is Jeremy, I lift things up and put them down...
No, on a serious note.... I was a vol. Firefighter Joined at the age of 14. while in HS i went to vo-tech for auto tech. graduated HS and ended up gettting a CDL and drove truck for a few years. After i finally understood that the trucking industry takes everybody nowhere i enrolled in collage and became a electrical tech. Six months later i was fighting a house fire, i was doing a search on the second floor looking for a little boy that was missing... i was in the hallway right near the stairwell when an explosion occurred and i was thrown down the stairs and torn 2 discs in my lower back....The missing little boy was found hidding in his tree house where he ran to when he got scared. im now on Disability and spend most of my time going insanely board..lol

Hello my name is Joe, and i was introduced to DF through Hyrda @ a AA meeting.
Cliffnotes version
Started out of HS as a auto tech, dropped that idea and wasted a year or two paying way too much to become factory suzuki tech, found out that the bike scene in NY sucks so took couple years in computer, loved the fixes-hated the customers, got my CDL and started working for the state plowing/paving/etc, further in swapped into a better dept and now im a CCTV master tech inspecting/maintaining/repairing city pipeline infrastructure. Cant see a job swap anytime soon as driving remote crawlers through pipes never gets old. Oh yeah, i have no outside life so its work then home, sometimes out on the rocks, but not much anymore.

I'm Austin, most of my friends call me dukart or duke, freshmen in college. Future chem or petroleum engineer. I have a work study job now doing chem tutoring but in the summer have done lots, concrete, site preparation, stump removal, ect. Love 4 wheelin', hard rock and metal, and hangin' with my friends who are a bunch of rednecks. I love snow and winter, good thing I live in ND (could do without the 100 degree days in summer though).

Thanks, i did it because the fire service was a true passion for me ...seriously, since i was about 4 or 5 all i could think about was firefighting...
I really love helping people, even more in a special time of need like a fire or an accident. often thought of saying screw the doctors and going full force back to the fire service as i miss it really, really bad!
here's a little something that was written in our local newsletter that the station put out to the public...yes, i helped write it....
Yes, Mr. Citizen, I’m that Volunteer Fireman.I have one of those silly red lights on my car. I even blow my horn at you when I’m going on a call. Sometimes my siren wakes you up at night and, at times, you may have to wait at a light a little longer to let me by. But I’m not going to apologize.
You complain about me wasting your tax money, but don’t understand when I say I can’t tie equipment up pumping out your pool. You say I don’t know my job, but when you smell smoke at night and call me, suddenly I’m an expert. You complain because my boss lets me leave work for a fire and doesn’t let you leave for your social club meeting but you forget the night the plant caught fire and I saved your job.
You say I’m only in it for fun, but you fail to see my sickness and exhaustion following a fire. You say I like seeing injuries and that death doesn’t bother me, but how could you understand my sleepless nights because of the life I couldn’t save. I pray that you and others in the community never need my services, and all I ask in return is that you pray for me while I do my job. I’m not a perfect person and I’ll never say I am, but, yes Mr. Citizen, I’m a Volunteer Fireman, and pretty proud of it.

thats the exact reason im doing it too
Heck, I'm game. This could be fun!
I'm Bob, 49 years young (but enjoy behaving like I'm 21 still!) I've had several careers, most of them in some sort of technical skills (electrical design, industrial robotics, digital communications) and am also a retired (20+ years) Air Force Reservist, served overseas a few times in the sandbox, and finished my military career up as an aircraft inspector on C-130H models. I made a major life change a few years ago when I was recruited by the Department of Homeland Security, and now I can say that I actually ENJOY going to work again!
Most of my auto experience is learned from my father (rest in peace Dad, I miss ya!) who was a large diesel engine mechanic. He had me turning wrenches at the age of 6. I've restored a few early Mustangs, a 1940's Ford tractor, and am currently rebuilding his 1936 Centaur tractor with the "help" of my two 8 year old boys.
In the past I've worked on the restoration of a WWII P-39 AirCobra and a B-17 bomber. Naturally I've also done pretty much any car repairs that I've ever needed.
My other "obsession" (just ask my wife!) is R/C model airplanes which I've built & flown for 35+ years. You'll find anything from backyard foam flyers to a turbine powered jet in my shop. Now that my two boys are involved as well it's become even more fun.
I was introduced to this forum through a yahoo search when I was having a hard time troubleshooting my Durango. I got some good advice on here as well as met some GREAT people, so I hang around and pop in from time to time.
BTW, for you guys working on your engineering degrees & such, don't just focus your job search on traditional engineering jobs. You'd be real surprised what's out there if you expand your search a bit. I've got a Masters in Aerospace Engineering that I truly have NEVER utilized in my life.
