Default 2003 Durango Transmission Not Working

The other day I was driving and my transmission stopped shifting. So I rolled to a stop and my car shut off. After looking it over I found that 1 of my transmission cooler lines had come off. So I hauled it home put the line back on put 4q atf 4 in it it starts but will not go into any gear.

I have run it for 30min and the fluid reads the same as it did when it was off, in P and N

Do I need to change the fluid and filter? Have the transmission rebuilt?

Info: 03 Durango 4x4 165k miles

Sounds like the pump may have gone out on you. Might be looking at a full rebuild because to replace the pump the trans has to come out.

Yep, Hydra's probably right, sounds like a bad pump, and he's also right about rebuilding it while it's out. There's no sense in just having the pump replaced, especially having been run out of fluid that way. I'm a firm believer in always rebuilding a tranny if you have it out unless it's already fresh (under 18 months). If you can't do the work yourself then it's probably cost prohibitive, but in your case it needs rebuilt regardless.

I have rebuild a motor before, but not a transmission. Is there a website or book I can use to help, maybe with a step by step. If it is not to hard I am sure I can do it.

P.S. Thanks for the help

Could there just be air in the lines? Can I prime the pump?

No

If you've rebuild a motor, you can probably rebuild a tranny. There are plenty of resources, but I don't have one for the 46RE that's in these things. I've heard it's a 727 with a bell and whistle or two, but I won't know that for sure until I get one apart. Past that, I don't know what to tell you. A TF727 is easy to rebuild, and parts are cheap. I've checked a kit for the 46RE...it's about $170. I didn't price a pump, but it'll probably be around $30 or $40 if I had to guess. I'd just google the tranny and see if you can find some info on it and decide whether you want to take on the job.

[EDIT]
Just wanted to say, also...you may see some damage to the planetaries, drums, etc. You'll have to replace any hard parts that have damage, and USE A NEW TORQUE CONVERTOR. It may be more cost-effective to buy a tranny from a salvage yard and rebuild it, instead of the one you take out. I don't know how long you can be without your Durango, but you really should remove and tear down your transmission and inspect everything carefully before deciding what to do.

Good luck.

I agree on the needed rebuild, but a dry fill on a 46rfe is about 16 quarts so dropping in 4 wont do much. Not saying it somehow pumped completely dry though.

The front pump on your transmission is a dual stage pump. Put the transmission in neutral when checking and add more fluid to the transmission. It holds 8 to 12 qts of atf. 4 qts will only do nothing. If it still doesn't move after that, then you need to remove the pan nd inspect the filters. You have a 45RFE transmission in your durango. Thats why I had ask what size the engine is.
