Default 2001 4.7 SLT 'Rango RPM bounce

Good Morning,

Lately I have been having some active RPM movement.

If you missed the title of this thread, I drive a 2001 4.7 SLT 'Rango.

Symptoms:
  1. When I start, the RPM's jump from ~500 to ~1500.
  2. The RPM movement is cyclic. (rises then falls, rinse/repeat)
  3. This RPM movement happens when in Park
  4. When I shift into Drive, the RPM's settle down to ~500
  5. When I shift from Drive into Park, the RPM's do their rise/fall action
  6. When in Drive and I press on the accelerator, I hear a sound that is similar to putting glass beads in a coffee can and spinning the can on its axis. It isn't really a grinding noise.
  7. This noise happens anytime I press on the accelerator, even the tiniest bit.
  8. The sound sounds like it is on the driver side but, then again, I am in the driver seat with the driver window down so...this isn't definitive.
Could this possible be the Throttle Position Sensor going out? Or is this a combination of multiple issues?

I appreciate all responses as you guys helped me out with that pesky blower switch fix.

Thank you for your response. I have a few questions:

  1. What is a "t's check fix"?
  2. What am I looking for on the PCV valve?

there is a hose that connects to it.pull off 1/4" hose and turn pcv down and pull out of side of oil filler neck.Replace with same part from parts store.I also meant "it's a cheep" fix.

Cool, I am (as the kids say) "down" with cheap atm. I located this valve and it seems pretty straight forward. I will post results when I have completed this.

Thank you again!

the reving issue could also be an IAC motor if the TPS doesnt fix it.

Recently I had a similar RPM jumping issue.. Mine would also bog down and sometimes die if it was still running cold.. After it warmed it it was ok.

Replaced the TPS and IAC and that cleared up the issue, and very easy to replaced.. TPs is cheap, the IAC was not.

Alternately, the weird grinding noise, does it make it when you only hit the accelerator, or do you have to be moving.. I had a similar noise and had to replace my wheel hubs as the bearings were shot and would crunch when moving and turning.

Does sound like 2 seporate issues. I would first replace the TPS and pull the TB off and clean the **** out of it and reinstall. The grinding could be the trans not shifting correctly because the TSP isn't telling the trans to be in the right spot before engaging.

I am looking at the NAPA website for IAC for my 2001 Durango SLT. Can anyone reccomend an IAC to me as they all seem very similar except in pricing.
