P0420 is bank 1 cat converter out of range and p0700 is a trans code probably caused by the restricted cat

P0420 1/1 Catalytic Conv Eff

You have two O2 sensors in your exhaust, one before the catalytic converter and one behind it. The computer compares the two and determines if the catalytic converter is working as it should. To get that code, you either have a bad O2 sensor (could be either one) or you need a new catalytic converter. I would change out both o2 sensors to be safe, reset the PCM and see if it come back.

P0700 EATX Ctrller DTC Present

WHEN MONITORED:

Ignition on and battery voltage greater than 10 volts .

SET CONDITION:
An active DTC is stored in the TCM. One Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
  • DTC present in the transmission control module

Sounds like the first code is triggering the second, correct the first and reset the PCM.

1/1 is bank one sensor one, pre cat sensor on the drivers side if you actually have 4 sensors, but i doubt that you do, only the california emissions package had 4 sensors and unless you live in CA i wouldnt expect you to have that package

Why do people assume it to be bad sensors rather than a cat issue? I'm getting occasional P0420's, and the D's 97,000 miles tell me the cat(s) are old too, besides the sensors.

Do you have a power steering switch on you engine? But if you do, inspect the switch. If it is leaking, the fluid will go thru the wire harness and first sensor the fluid goes too is the o2 sensor and then to the PCM.
