adukart, my 46re was doing the same as yours, not quite right, a code or two that I reset, then temp light, then it was toast. Since I didn't have access to a lift, and figured "look at all the bucks I saved doing everything else to all my vehicles", I had a local shop do it. The inside was pretty trashed. The lockup clutches died and spit crap all through the system, which took out clutches, etc. I popped for a high end TC and kevlar bands (I tow 6,000 lbs pretty often). That was last Oct, and it's been perfect!

It's great you plan to do it yourself, I'm all for that (was putting cams in Chevy's when I was 15 in Detroit 52 years ago). There is a plan B though (B for bucks), if you 'just want it fixed'. Good luck.

Here is the description of the kit sitting in the back of the durango waiting for install "Here is the description of the kit I bought "#K46-2. Fits 1990 - 2002 Dodge gas transmissions. Turn your 518 / 46RH / 46RE transmission into our level 2 Viper transmission with this Combo Kit and receive a large discount for buying in quantity. You get the Alto Red Eagle master rebuild kit, #BHP, Carbon intermediate flex band, Fairbanks TransAction kit, heavy duty Superior low / reverse servo, heavy duty intermediate band apply strut and a #6D heavy duty lock-up torque converter. Regular Price $805.00, Combo Kit Price $726.00, you save 9.8%." This is before shipping. Also got a trans temp gauge that the sender doubles as a drain plug."

My plan was to do a cam this summer but this had to take priority.

Transmission is out now. I'll post a video of its operation with the shift kit and stuff. Some of the pains where figuring out that the crossmember doesn't come out without removing the a torsion bar. Also the t-case is much easier to unbolt by lowering the assembly as well with the top bell housing bolts with some long extensions and a swivel socket. The weird bracket system threw me off at first. But only the bolts on the diff and the trans have to be touched, not the motor. I took my distributor cap off in case the motor leaned back that far.

So I finally got around to this project. I have had the trans out for weeks but was working on my sierra (way too much to explain). Anyways I found something unsettling during dis-assembly today. I pulled off the valve body then per fsm instruction pulled the outer accumulator piston spring off, then the piston, then next was the inner spring. Only problem was the inner spring was missing. Now I know the original owner (an uncle) had a reman torque converter put in and the trans shop messed around with it (he can't recall exactly). This was all done because of the tps sensor went out at 80k. Makes me wonder what else they screwed up...............

I was wondering where you where on this project... glad to see you have gotten back to it..

I would not be so sure that the shop screwed up .. i remember reading somewhere that the 46's only got 2 springs on the accumulator piston if certain options where added. You may just not have had one of the options .

Yeah I talked to the transmission tech at the dodge dealer I work at and he said it was optional type of part depending on. I do now need an intermediate shaft, rear drum, and the o/d piston on the back of the trans. The shaft fried out back there and the surface started to come off.....

I would love to find out what the options and depending on are... my 98 with a 44RE and no tow package came with both springs. I have also ripped apart a 42RE in the junkyard just for *&it's and giggles and that one also had both springs.

word of the wise.... take your sweet time doing it!! the more you rush the more room for stupid errors. nothing sucks more than rebuilding something then finding out it dont work and you have to pull it out again to see why.
