Ok so it was P0440 after trying the key thing. I looked it up and it's Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction. Now comes the 'fun' part of trying to diagnose exactly what's causing it and fix it.

I opened and closed the gas cap. That did nothing -- the light was still on. Again, my gas cap was bought from an auto store and it's not what the Durango came with.

I'm short on the moola and don't know any mechanics who would give me a good deal (relatively). I am a total newbie when it comes to engine stuff but can somebody help me?

Thanks in advance

If it's a cap seal issue it will take a few drive cycles to clear itself (provided the cap will seal).
Otherwise a premium code reader can reset the PCM and clear all codes or perhaps disconnecting the battery for a while may do it.

I stopped going to advance as they will no longer allow you to pull your own code. they want you to let there idiots, i mean people do it for you.. then they want you to pop the hood so they can play master mechanic under the hood.

Autozone is a little better, you have to allow them to pull it but, all they do is print out the code and possible causes afterwards...

P0440 is a gen Evap performance code. That means it could be anything. From crack hoses, LDP pump or fuel tank. What you need to do is find a scanner the that can clear the codes and run a Evap test and see what codes you get. Then if you can't find the problem, you can smoke test or vacuum test the system.
