Default Malfunction Indicator Light on

Today after starting the car when it was parked, I noticed the malfunction indicator light turn on (not flashing or blinking).

It was parked indoors as I was shopping. However, normally it's parked outdoors overnight.

Background info: I fuelled up yesterday; car was recently stored outdoors for two months; it has a independently-bought lockable gas cap.

How can I fix the light problem?

Thx

It's not a light problem. The light is telling you of another problem.

Turn the key on-off-on-off-on quickly and read the code form the odometer screen. You can then either ask here, or google it on your own and then ask if confused.

When you say turn it on, until what part should I turn it? Just before start the car?

Also, for which of the codes is it okay to drive and for which must I fix the problem immediately?

Key positions: Acc - Off - Unlock - On - Start. The key comes can be removed when it's in the Off position.

Not all years or models can do the key dance.

I'm fairly sure I've done it on my 99 before I got a bluetooth OBDII reader.

Didn't know about key thing maybe not working in other than my '01, sorry.

That's the way to go for anyone interested in know more about their '96+ vehicle. Anyone with a smartphone or tablet and a less than $20 gizmo from Amazon can know more then they ever imagined about OBDII. I keep one in each vehicle.

If you don't spend the 20 on a code reader you might try taking it to an Autozone, Advance Auto, or another part supplier. They may read your code for free although they'll also try to make a sale. Call them first.
