Default 2000 Durango reverse lights stuck on??

Hey everyone, im having a strange problem with my truck. It is a 2000 Durango 4.7 SLT. One day i noticed that my reverse lights were stuck on after the truck had been sitting over night. I tried to move the shifter up and down and it didnt help. i decided to unscrew the bulbs just enough so they wouldnt turn on. i kept it this way for a few months until i brought it to a shop for a state inspection. they screwed the bulbs back in "claimed" that they changed "a bulb" and everything worked fine. -_- . Its been a few months since then and they have just decided to turn back on. does anyone have any ideas where i should start looking? Thank you

Neutral Safety Switch.... if that does not cure it your going to have to trace the wires back and see where it is broken or shorting out...

Yeah that's what I'd think too. Although I'm confused about one thing, are the lights staying on with the truck off or only when it's running?

It happens when the keys are off or on they are just stuck on. Where is the neutral safety switch located? Is it an easy fix?

on the side of the transmission.. if you know how to unscrew things you can replace the NSS... just keep in mind why you remove it you will loose some transmission fluid so be ready for it..

Yeah, I let that slip my mind once and got covered in transmission fluid.

The 4.7 has a 45/545RFE transmission. The safety neutral switch is part of the solenoid pack. You should disconnect the large connector at the transmission and see if the light is still on. If it is, then the wire harness is shorting some where. If the lights go out, then it inside the transmission. You would have to remove the valve body and inspect.

I picked up a nss last night before I able to read the updated post. the one I purchased had a 3 pin plug in a straight line. I checked over the whole transmission and there was nothing that was similar. it looks like they did change the transmission after 99 I went ahead a removed the large connector on the transmission and the lights are still stuck on. I guess its time to bust out the Haynes manual and start doin some wiring troubleshooting.

just letting everyone know I have fixed the problem!!! it turns out that the positive battery lead the the reverse lights are right next to each other on the plug for trailer adapter. needless to say they were melted together. Thank you all for the support
