Default Engine Turns Over, Won't Start, just began last night....

Hello, my first time on this forum. I own a 99' Durango, 5.9 SLT. It has been running great, I do take good care of it. Last night around 9:00 I left the house, and got as far as about 4 houses down the street, when it stalled. I tried for about a half hour to start it....nothing. It turns over strong, but act's like it's out of gas. ( it's got plenty ). So, this morning I go out there, and i noticed that when I turn the key to ignition, the gauges don't move. All the suddon I heard a "click", and the gas gauge went up where it is supposed to be, so I tried it, and it fired up. Not to last long though, after about 2 minutes it stalled. I checked the ignition again and no gauge movement. It seems every time I turn the key to ignition, I can pretty much tell when it's going to start....when the gauges act right. At this time I put my OBD11 reader on it. when I checked it, it just so happen to be at a point when the gauges were acting correct, and the reader read "NO CODES". Then, the next time I checked it, the gauges were not responding and it read "LINK ERROR", "KWP2000", "ISO 9141". Oh, and I noticed a "security" light intermittently in the gauge cluster. Now, 5 years ago I had the "powertrain control module" and the "body control module" replaced w/ new by the dealer. (very $$$$). I don't know what to do, it is my wife, & myself's only vehicle, and we are not rich. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

sounds like you have a loose ground somewhere.. start with making sure your battery terminals are clean and tight then look around to see if you can find any other grounds that are loose or dirty.

if everything checks out okay then usually stalling issues are tied to the crankshaft sensor but with the gauges acting weird ill almost bet its a loose or dirty ground.

Thank you very much for your response OLD SCHOOL, I will for sure pop the hood tomorrow AM and clean & tighten all grounds. One thing I did notice was the odometer, w/ the key in the ignition spot, the odometer flashes on & off, & then it reads "no bus". At the same time I can hear what sounds like the relays under the hood clicking on & off. But that "no bus" reding on the odometer is something iv'e never seen before, even when the computers went out 5 yrs. ago, that never showed up. Just picking your mind. Thanx again!

in a nutshell it means there is a loose or dirty connection somewhere and the cluster is not communicating with the computer. That would explain all the weird issues..

Thanx again Old School!! I did clean batt. connections, and all grounds I could see/find. Now, today it fired up, and I let run for 30 min. shut off, let sit for 90 min. 30 min. run, 90 min. off. I did this for about 5 or 6 times and it shut down by itself one time. I had to let it sit for about 10 min. then it started up again. Even though both computers were replaced 5 yrs. ago, i'd hate to think I have to replace one or both of them again. Is there a test that can be done so I can rule out the comp. being the problem? Thank you so much again OLD SCHOOL for walking me through this.

I'd check the battery and alternator too. Low power can screw with the computers.

It sounds like the dreaded 1999 PCM issue. Next time it does it put a bag of ice on top of the PCM and take it for a ride, if it still shuts down it is something else. The PCM's in the 1999 get hot, and the heat takes them out.

Thank you THAT GUY & HYDRASHOCKER for the info. I did check batt. and alt. both tip-top cond. Yesterday morning I drove to a Dr. appt., I got about 8 miles from my home and the freakin thing stalled on me. luckily I was in front of a parking lot, moving, so I just whipped it in, out of traffic. I sat there for about one in a half hrs. trying to start it. every once in a while it would turn over but not stay on for any longer than 30 seconds or so. If i turn the key to ignition, I can pretty much tell when it's going to start, the gas gauge will work, and then it will kick over. If I have the key in ignition spot, I can hear the relays clicking, and "no bus" shows up on the odometer. I even tried switching around some of the relays, hoping it was a relay problem, but nothing. Gosh I hate to have to take this thing to a shop, or dealer again. 5 yrs. ago, a shop, and the dealer got me for aprox. 3 grand to replace both computers. Thanx again guy's.

Default 1998 dodge durango wouldnt start

[QUOTE=dukebro;3187730]
MY 98 did the almost the exact thing.
I had a bad connection at the computer on the left panel. I had already replaced it, so I didn't think about it being bad.
IT was, the connectors have to be tight.
We figured it out by having someone start it and pull down on the wiring. The center one seems to be loose.
So I sent the computer back I had a warranty.
Even so, 200$ isnt a bad price.
Check the harness' ×3.
