Default Durango 4.7 to 5.2 engine swap

Hi everyone I am new to the group. I am sure this question has been asked. But what is everyone’s thought on swapping out the 4.7 for the 5.2. And what all parts would I have to change. Thanx

Major undertaking. Installing a 5.7 would be easier......

What year is your durango?

It is a 2000. And what all would be involved?

Don't know if you're asking because you think it will be an upgrade... it won't. Now if it's what's advantageous for other reasons, I understand.

5.2L(318) 220hp 295 ft/lbs

4.7L(287) 240hp 300ft/lbs

Default 318

I’m not really worried about tourqe or horse power. I am more concerned about reliability. And the 318 would have a lot more parts available for it. To make it at least compatible if not more to the 4.7

What's wrong with the motor that is in it?

What you have in mind is possible, but, a LOT of work. Trans will have to change as well. Along with most of the electronics.

Default Motor

It went in for head gaskets. The shop tore it apart and rolled it outside

How long has it been sitting outside???? Yeah, that looks pretty bad.

Still and all, I think you would spend less just getting a good used motor (4.7) to toss in there.

I consider the 4.7 very reliable with basic maintenance. Mine's currently at 320K with no rebuilds. They are not cheap on the used market, but it will be cheaper, easier and a lot more reliable than trying to make a 5.2 work.
