Default 1999 Dodge Durango 5.9L Front Brake Issue

Hey all,

Trying to help my roommate with his '99 Durango (5.9L 4x4). We are doing the front brakes, and the caliper came off nice and easily, made sure to spray penetrating oil on the bolts and they came loose easily. My problem is that the rotor is STUCK to the hub....almost like it is welded on (I know it HAS to be RUST that is being a pain in the ****) however, all my tricks don't seem to cut it on this....I've tried spraying PB Blaster all around the hub and wheel studs, let it sit and then break out the BFH and hit it...but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Went with the propane torch and concentrated around the wheel hub opening...then wailed on it with the hammer...nada.

Any other suggestions or tricks? We are replacing the rotors due to excessive wear on the inside but just cannot get the blasted thing off...

Thanks in advance

Steve

Yeah, I use a 3 pound single-jack to remove rotors/drums. Couple good HARD whacks, and they generally pop off.

We snapped.the head off my 2lb single jack....that SOB was on there (and I was wailing on it like it owed me money!) I had just never seen a rotor stuck like that before.

Yeah, I have had a couple that were REAL reluctant to come off..... Bigger hammer.... Torch..... Air chisel..... etc. I used to keep them in my "Hall of Shame"...... a collection of REALLY trashed parts I took off customer cars.... My personal favorite was the brake rotor where NONE of the swept area was left. The customer had driven it metal to metal for so long, the swept part separated from the hub..... and he whined about his brakes had been pulling left for MONTHS.... and he checked the fluid......

I don't mess with a coffee warmer propane bottle torch, all but useless for something like that. I have a TORCH as in oxyacetylene.

On some of my previous vehicles, there were threaded holes in the rotors. You'd put two screws in which would hit the hub as you tightened, forcing the stuck rotor off.

Strange question....on the outer brake pad, does the clip that extends down go over or under the caliper slides? Seeing conflicting info out on the interwebs....they came off with the clip UNDER the slides but it doesn't seem right.

Steve

Passenger side brake before disassembly.

Gah! This '99 Durango is going to cause me to seriously consider starting day drinking! The effing caliper bolts are buggered...so off to Napa I went...got the oversized "self tapping" caliper pins....and they wouldn't "bite"....so I ordered the Heli-Coil kit off Amazon (M9 x 1.25mm) just not my day....and to top it off...the alternator took a dump on my '00 4.7l Durango....and left the wife sitting this morning....when AAA gave her a jump start so she could come home and I drive her to work, the alternator was SMOKING when it was jumped....they shut the engine off and re-jumped it and it didn't smoke when it got up to speed.

on 2nd thought...the day drinking is about to begin....

Get 03 knuckles, calipers, and lower ball joints. Ditch all that earlier caliper nonsense.

That spring slip rode on the underside on mine too I believe.
