Default 2000 Durango 4X4 Anti spin diff clutches falling apart

I Know by my Vin # and the build sheet I was supposed to have a Anti-Spin diff in my durango but the normal tests were acting like it was a open diff.
I pulled the cover off and found Metal clutch parts as well as the fiber ones Broken and in the bottom of the diff area.
Any Idea what would cause the clutch packs to break apart I realize they will wear but did not expect to see broken pieces.
Now my biggest question is how long will I be able to run the Durango (or can I at all) until I can figure out a way to either replace the clutches themselves or have to replace the entire Unit?
I cannot find my Service manual ( I Must have it on a different drive) And I seen two Pieces on the R Side of diff unit that look like Caps or bolts that Hold pressure on the R Side plates that seem to have broken loose or came un screwed and no longer are holding any pressure on the clutches them selves. I Am wondering if that is a sign I need a completely new carrier unit and that I can not just replace the clutch packs themselves\
I am unable to get pictures at the moment due to our heavy rain and wind we have ( I have to work on this outside as I do not have any place else to work on it

The metal clips like to break in any event. Just a poor design I believe. Rebuilding them isn't too bad, and less expensive than replacing it with something better.

You can probably still rebuild yours, you won't know for certain until you have it apart..... Having to work on it outside though, and being dependent on nice weather, is going to complicate matters. If you have something else to drive, parking the Rango for a bit would be a good idea.

I am curious if I had not decided to drain the oil out of the rear diff and noticed those clutch plates had came apart and found they were no longer keeping pressure on the Axle spider gear could it of allowed the C clip to fall off and the axle to come out of vehicle while driving.
That is quite a scary situation if that is possible,

Nope. The cross pin for the spiders prevents the axles from moving in far enough for the clips to fall out.

That's great to know, I found a 99 in a wrecking yard not to far away from me that according to the Vin# Has the 9.25 With the 3.92 Gearing with Trac-Loc for $150 If it looks good when I go to pull it I plan to instal that and then take the current one and either find a way to rebuild it with HD parts or replace the Carrier with something better.
And while iI am at it replace bearings and anything else, and I do not have to rush to get it done to have a working vehicle.

BTW thanks for all the help with this I appreciate it, I was just overwhelmed when I first realized the diff was all messed up, As I cannot afford to spends $1-2K to have a shop go and fix this.

Does your 'Rango currently have 3.92 gears in it? If it does, that'll work fine, if it doesn't, don't use 4x4 with mismatched gears. Tends to break stuff.

Oh Absolutely, They did have a bunch (Well 6 is a bunch to me) with the open diffs, Trac-loc but were all 3.55 gears only one matched what I have
I had to replace the 8.75 in my 74 Power wagon so I know about being sure to match up gearing. On that one I got lucky and found the third member with the Posi unit and I think it had 3.91 gears. $75 in 1992
But thank you for mentioning this as I may not have known this info and could of caused a world of hurt on myself.

I just had both my front/rear diff's replaced by 4 Wheel Parts. The front diff housing was broken and had to get a used one from the bone yard. The used diff was not in good shape. making whiny gear noises. Checked around and cannot find a new assembly to replace it with. Most places do not want to rebuild it, but rather just replace it with another used diff. Dont want to chance another used diff and risk that it may be bad either. Called around places that rebuilds diff and came across 4 wheel parts. The price of other places to replace with a used diff was a couple hundred more than what 4 wheel parts will charge to completely rebuild the diff with all new parts.

So I went ahead and had 4 Wheel parts rebuild my front diff and while doing that, I decide to have them rebuild the rear diff since I have over 230k miles on my almost 22 year old truck. I had to wait over 6 weeks for parts availability... Most parts were available, but the rebuild kit was the final piece that was backordered for 6 weeks.

Now truck drives so smooth and quiet and no more whiny gear noises coming from front.
