It has been several years since I replaced ours on a 2000 Durango, thinking you have to take off the lower panel under the steering wheel first to gain access to the panel surrounding the radio, then you'll see how to go from there.

Its not going to be fun, but on my 03 I had to remove the screws at the top of the surround by the gauges, and then at the bottom of the dash (I think 2 on the drivers side and one towards the passenger side just before the glove box). The whole plastic from the gauges to the raido is all one piece. I pulled it out far enough to get the old radio out and the new one in. It did not pull off easy for me, but I did not break anything.

Taking the dash out is not hard at all, just make sure you have all the screws out before you go yanking.

Unscrew the panel below the steering wheel, then just grab the plastic trim and gently pull. It'll pop off with no worries. From there, there are a few screws holding the headunit in.
