My guess it that it only does it when its cold? Not cold out, but after the vehicl has sat and cooled off.
The whining you are hearing is the pressure regulator in the tranny. It is normal and should go away after the vehicle warms up.

Are you turning while backing up? My Durango groans when I back out of my garage and turn. My guess is that you are hearing the rear differential doing it's normal slipping.

its only when i back up. wheel direction dont seem to matter any...the durango can be cold or warmed up. it doesn't seem to matter. im suspecting a caliper sticking cause when it did it tonight. i put some slight pressure on the brake pedal and it stopped. so when i get some time during my next 2 weeks of straight work. i'll have to pull off the front wheels and take a peek.

I just recently had a problem like this with my Jeep WJ. If it gets worse sounding especially when you start getting at higher speeds, do you get any kind of vibration also? If so, you need to look at your front drive shaft. It is hard to tell though when you can't see the vehicle. Describe the best you can when and how and what it does.

it stops after i hit about 5mph. no vibration at all. cold or warmed up. it doesnt seem to matter. its like a groaning noise. but when i apply some brake pressure it seems to stop it...could it be a stuck caliper? or bearings wearing out?

Sounds like it could be a caliper or something stuck between it and the rotor.

mine does it, it's not the calipers, check your fluid in your tranny, could be that i'v got a minor leak in my oilcooler that whenever my oil gets below a certian level it'll kinda "hmmm" whenever take of in FW or reverse.
