Towing info needed
I just got a 02 with the factory towing package with the 5.9 and wanted to know how good these will tow. I have a boat that weighes around 2500lb and a 20' trailer that i haul my atv's on--do yall think it will pull these with no problem?
I have friends that have the 360 and it pulls real nice. Other friends that have suburbans have been impressed by the power of the 360. 2500lbs out to be nothing for it. My 318 does pretty good with 2000 pounds behind it. Have fun! Oh yeah, forgot about your trailer. That can't be more than 1000 but even still, 3500lbs should still be nothing. You probably wouln't be pushing it until about 4500 to 5000 lbs.
If memory serves, if you have the tow package setup on your D with a 5.9, chances are you may have 3:92 gear ratios. You can check your speedo to know. If you are doing 65 mph, you should be hovering near the 2000-2100 rpm range.
I think the max load capacity for the Durango with towing package is 7500 lbs.

Hey ken how about mine I don't have the factory towing package what do you think I would be able to tow I will be moving out to NV around the end of Sept. or so and will be towing my wifes Scion Xa on a car dolly and both cars will be stuffed full. I think the car is propably around the 2.5k mark or so and the dolly is about 500 lbs. from uhaul? Also with taking it out of OD can i leave it in OD when traveling downhill and in the flat areas of the plains states?

As your D is a 4WD, I would bet it would be 3:73 gear ratio. This is one of those times it may be good to invest in a CAI and/or free flow exhaust to let your engine breathe when it is pulling something unless you already done so. Sure as heck helps in making your engine last alot longer.
I do have the class III hitch with the 2 inch receiver and my air intake should be good right? I know you saw the pic's I took I could just get a k&n drop in filter I'm guessing. The exhaust is not an option right now as the move is going to put a huge dent in my wallet. I will have to check my glove box for my gearing but my D is the SLT so it is only one step down from the R/T.

I have looked on the sticker sheet and can't find the gear ratio anywhere. The rpm range you are talking about is in that range. It has the heavy duty cooling and a auxiliary trans cooler and has the anti-spin diff and a class iv receiver.
Thanks for the info[sm=groupwave.gif]

you guys will be FIne towing ... that stock towing package is what I have and my parents had.. we did a lot of boating which our boat was like 4300 pounds and (I think) and then with camping gear and about 5 adults in the car we went 12 hours up canyons and summer heat and it ran fine.. now kensai is right in every thing he sais I just wanted to say some thing too I have been way to quite... mean greann going to Nevada huh thats cool.. you driving though Utah.?? thats a mighty crazy but fine state.. hahaha.. (where I'm from) any ways.. happy driving.. PS.. towed my boat this summer with 6 in the durango and about 100 out side trip about 2 hours and I never went about 215 deg with my ac going.. and I think my 160 deg therm really helped.. JP.. lucky you guys are going end of summer though.. a lot better for your rides..
Mean Green,
I am pretty sure that your SLT 4WD should have at least 3:73 gears. Is your class 3 receiver factory? Usually the tow package is just the OEM hitch receiver with factory power harness that is mounted to the left of the hitch. I think the heavy duty cooling package is optional on the smaller engines but could be part of a higher tow package on the 5.9's? Just a guess. I would assume if your D have a factory aux electric cooling fan, that let's you know it has the heavy duty cooling package??
Just remember, if your gear ratio is smaller, the less towing capacity your vehicle will be able to tow unless you have a beefed up engine and tranny to compensate for the smaller gear ratio. Some examples for illustration but not accurate figures:
3:92 gears can pull up to 7500 lbs
3:73 gears can pull up to 5000 lbs
3:55 gears can pull up to 4000 lbs ??
Then you have to factor your engine size and power requirements to meet those weights.
I will assume that the 4.7's and 5.2's does not normally come with 3:92 gear ratios as that highest gear ratio is intended for 5.9's to provide maximum towing power.
Also, if memory serves, the 7500 lb towing limit is targeted only for the 2WD's. I think the 4WD's has a lower towing limit, but not by much. I wonder if it is because of the transfer case that is the limiting factor to towing limits?

One thing is that the 4X4 weighs more than a 2wd. Also the transfer case takes a small amount of power also. I've towed 5K with my truck and could bearly feel it. I've got the 392's in my truck.
