Default Cruise control surge

Recently read about "unlearning" the overshoot/undershoot of the speed control controlled by the cruise control module caused by setting cruise during deceleration. The method is: 1.) cruise control ON, 2). SET speed during acceleration (foot on accelerator) at desired speed, 3). CANCEL or OFF, 4). Takes 10 -15 cycles to reset. I'm going to try before buying the TPS. Anyone have experience with this method?

Also believe the dealerships are limited to codes for all diagnostics. 2001 Dakota big six. Twice at the dealer's shop and $700.00 for poor running when cold and at stops. They decarbed three times and had NO other ideas. My local unaffiliated mechanic and I put our heads together and narrowed it to map sensor or oxygen sensor. Turned out to be oxygen sensor ($120.00 and $90.00 labor) and no check engine light for months now. Only code was misfire on 1, 3 and 5.

Another holy cow at $90 labor to swap an O2 sensor. Good money for 15 minutes MAX time.

This Old Thread provided the info I needed. And mechanic needed to partly drop tranny to get wrench on. All still better than the no result service/cost from dealer.
Had a chance to "unlearn" CCM last night on 8 mile trip to town and it seems to have worked, at least at 60mph cruises now with NO surges. Next time out on the interstate will prove at 75 mph. Looks like I saved the cost of TPS so I'm better off than those who prefer to swap parts. I suspect de-energizing the TPS causes CCM to relearn cruise over/under pattern anyway.

Followup: Pulled the bill from a few months ago after remembering Dakota went to mechanic for rear end whine and shimmy. We thought differential or axle after our rollercoaster test drive with my mechanic at the wheel. Pulling cover showed no problem. When on lift found bad u-joint. Couldn't diagnose on the ground, I tried that first, since wheels had to be floating to reveal any play in driveshaft. Cost for u-joint $19.27 and labor 1 hour at rate and cost for oxygen sensor $97.22 and 1 hour labor because of poor access described. 134k.
