Default Rev problems

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango - it has 91K miles on it - 4wd, 4.7lv8. We went on a 2 hour trip out of town this weekend - almost all interstate driving in the coastal plain of NC - read, very flat topography. I'm not sure if this started while on cruise control or if CC had anything to do with it but this was the symptom. With CC set on 77 mph (in a 70 mph zone), I was running about 2300 RPM - intermittently the tach would bump from 2300 to about 2600 and then fall right back down. This was not while going up a hill or anything like that. Should not have needed the extra power to keep at 77. I took the CC off and noticed it did the same thing when your foot was on the pedal so I don't expect it is a CC problem. Also, only tried this in the higher speed range so I don't know if it would do this at lower speeds or not. We do all routine maintenance and it is now time for another tranny service - don't know if that could be part of the problem or not.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

It was the TPS sensor for me, just this stupid little piece of plastic. Mine would jump from about 1200 rpms to like 1800 rpms and then kick right back down. those sensors just go, not really a big deal to change. If i remember right, its under the air intake ontop of the engine, but im not sure with your because I have the 5.7 liter.

Yep the TPS is the problem. It is right on top of the intake on the right side of the throttle body. The part is around 30 dollars and it is a very easy install.

Well it hasn't been thoroughly road tested, but it appears that it was the TPS! Another symptom was that every time we would start the truck, it would rev really high. More than a typical choke would. And upon startup after TPS replacement, this was gone as well.

The part was easy to find at my local auto parts store and less than $30. The dealer would have charged me that to even pull it in the garage. Thanks a bunch for the help!!

2001 Durango 4.7. Same thing here and everything appears to be working OK. Also found that the hose to the right & above the TPS was split where it slips on. No matter which forum it came from... I Thank You All!

FYI
Local auto parts store 48.99
Kragen 49.99
Pep Boys - No answer - WTF? Simultaneously called Autozone and they picked up first, uhhh - after 15 minutes...
Autozone - 15 minutes on hold, 1 in stock, 29.99. P/U & install in about an hour - Including hold time...

Thanks again!
