99 durango - clicking noise when accellerating - please help
Hello fellow dodge drivers,
My 99 durango only has 120k miles on it, so I would like to keep driving it for another 25k if possible.
My problem:
When I accellerate, there is a clicking noise that seems to get louder the harder I push on the accellerator.
if I accellerate slowly, the noise is not there. If I drive onto a freeway onramp and try to accellerate quickly, the noise becomes very obvoius but only while I am accellerating. If I am just cruising along at 55mph, there is no clicking noise, but if I pass someone and crank it up to 75-80, the noise shows up.
This has nothing to do with turning from what I can tell since it is happening while I am moving straight forward. I already replaced the U joints on my MAIN drive shaft, but not the front drive shaft.
My rear diff has plenty of fluid, although very dark. I replaced the entire front end about 8 months ago, and it cost me a lot of money to do so, so I would really like to solve this problem without dishing out another 1000 bucks.
Thanks for any helpful answers. If you need more details, please ask.
Thanks,
LLCPREZ

could it be a ping and not a clicking? one way to find out is throw some 91/93 octane fuel in it and see if it goes away. pinging is common on the magnum motors once the plenum gasket starts leaking... check your oil level to see if it's droped any. if it has, take a peak down thru the throttle body and look for oil on the bottom of the intake manifold. that is a clear sign of a leaky plenum, again a major contributor to pinging.

yes my durango is leaking oil, but it has been leaking oil forever and this problem is new. the problem is especially bad when going up hills.
i will look into the leaky plenum. thanks for the help. if anyone else has other ideas please let me know.
i'll be taking my car to a friends house tomorrow to work on this.
thanks,

sounds like a leaky plenum gasket. this would be separate from an external leak, the plenum leak is internal and the best way to find it is to pull off the throttle body and look down the intake with a flash light and small mirror so you can see all of the corners. a light film is norma, pooling is not. My bet is your plenum is leaking.

my 99 d is doing the same exact thing, it doesnt burn oil or leak or anything it sounds like its coming from the tranny (auto) or transfer case, sounds like a metal wire is wrapped around the driveshaft slapping everything underneath the truck, but only does this under acceleration checked all u joints and all that jazz and everything is fine, i dont understand it at all

I am assuming that it is a 4wd. Have you made sure it isn't your front axel(s)? I see you replaced the front end 8 months ago, did you make sure that there was plenty of lubrication inside of your outer/inner CV joints? Make sure the seals have not been broken.

the front driveshaft and both cv axels are completely out of the truck running it 2wd , the noise seems to be coming from mid truck area when i open my door and listen, my g/f didnt think it was my tranny so im really at a loss, anyone want to buy a 2wd D?
