Damn near zero. Why? If the seal is the problem on your old one, it will be a problem for your (new) one. You need to replace all the leaky seals regardless of whether or not you replace the compressor and pump it back up.

Also, it is far far better for you to have the system pressure checked and vacuum checked to insure that you don't have leaks and if the system can hold up to the presssure before you bother, or you can overfill the system and have air in the lines and end up with either not enough refrigerant (weak cooling), and/or way too much pressure and boom! Do over.

if you over fill the 134a, all that'll happen is the pressure relief valve will pop, you won't get an explosion. i had good luck with used compressors.

if the leak is small then just carry some cans of 134a with you.

The boom I was referring to was not an explosion, but the pop of seals that will blow out if you overpressurize the system. Then you have the lovely task of replacing a whole lot more then just one or two.

I too had good luck with a used compressor. The compressor is not the problem. Air and contaminants are your enemy. Lack of enough coolent is your enemy. Too much pressure is definitely your enemy. All curable by a simple 10 minute check by someone who has the proper equipment to do it.

Again, pay a little money and get it pressure and vacuum checked and save yourself alot of headache. Or go cheap and do what was suggested earlier.

If you open the system make sure you put in a new receiver/drier

Default Great Info

Thanks for the help. that was the info I needed

Will put in new receiver/drier at same time. With the help of this forum the S.O. and I have two great inexpensive daily drivers.

Thank you Joe and Diane

Three years ago, I was told at the deallership the shaft seal on my '98 Neon's A/C compressor was leaking.

I added some 134A w/sealer instead.

3 years and 30K miles later I'm on the same compressor - but I did have to add a few ounces again to get it to run ice cold.
