97 2.0 sohc driving me crazy
ok so i guess ill start the story at the top. i have a 97 dodge neon with a 2.0 sohc that i cant figure out whats wrong for the life of me. everything ive searched and found on the 1gn forum points to a crank sensor but i already replaced that and it still wont start. what it was doing is it would start fine and run great completely cold but when it would start to warm up it would just shut off and refuse to restart until it was completely cooled off again. and after it would shut off i lost spark.
the motor is out of a 96 as the original broke a timing belt and bent valves. so i bought a whole second car for $400 and took the motor out and scrapped the rest for $200. before the motor went in i replaced the timing belt and the idler pully for the timing belt. after that the car ran great. even on the old motor and new both sometimes when i was driving down the highway at about 65-70 mph it would start dropping rpm's then bringing them back up. when the rpm's dropped i would lose power and it would keep doing it making the car kick and buck real bad. when it first started if i would accelerate it would go away. but after the motor swap it steadily got worse and worse until it started dying on me and not starting until it was cool again.
it has new msd coil, new ngk plugs, new bosche wires, new bosche cam sensor, new bosche crank sensor.
now since it acted like the crank sensor and i put that in there it did not fix it. the sensor came with new plug and some wire so when i finally got around to putting that on there the car wont start at all now. and yes i tripple checked to makes sure the wires were correct before installing. i used heat shrink and everything. the last time it started it ran 4 minutes before dying. i tested the fuel pressure and its steady at 49 psi the entire time it was running up to the moment it dies. and even when it wont start and just cranks it has a steady 45 psi.
so now the big question................ anyone know the problem? i miss my 37.5 mpg

just read this entire thread.

so i went out and tried the jumper wire across the ASD relay. The result was that i got it to start back up with the new connector luckily but once again......... it ran for about 4 minutes then just shut off and would not start back up.
any help please? almost 80 views and not a single response even? obviously others are having this problem........... did anyone ever find the cause?

Sounds like a faulty fuel pump to me. After overheating it will shut down. When cooled off completely, it will crank again. If the previous owner and/or yourself have driven the car with less than 1/4 tank of gas, then that would be my guess. The fuel keeps the pump from getting too hot.
its not a fuel pump i know that. because im just losing spark which has nothing to do with the fuel. and even after it dies i still have good fuel pressure even while trying to crank right after dying it has 44psi which even dodge themself says is more than enough to start it.
Are you using the pcm from the donor car? If you do, Maby its something wrong with that, and therefor it godt scrapt.
If not, Maby your 98 pcm are tosted, or it dont fit the 96 engine.
Just some thoughts from Norway

Still points to the cps then. I know you said you changed it with a new one but they have been known to be bad right out of the box.

my car is a 97, the motor is a 96, but i swapped over all sensors that did not have identical parts numbers. or just replaced those sensors all together with brand new ones for a 97, and the computer is from the 97. the other car ran when i bought it to. well the day before because he took the battery and the alternator which was fine with me because it was just for part anyway. so it shouldnt be an issue of parts not working together because it ran for a few months after i swapped the motor anyway.
