Default HG Confusion?

Some might know that i have a 97 Sohc. I took out the engine to replace it with a newer engine (trouble free). I just looked over the parts, and i noticed that the hg was replaced with a mls. My mother took it to the dealer about 1 year ago. The hole reason we planned to change engines was because of the hg. Just some info, if you have a mls, dont think it will be trouble free. Right before we took it out, my father and i did a compression test, and it came up very low. 90 and even one was at 40. Just a word of advice, the mls isn't as good as some say.

Perhaps not, but they are way better than what Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler put in their beginning lines of the Neon.. I have a 98 Neon w/ the MLS (Checked when I took off the intake manifold) and I have yet to run into any problems, still runs like a champ w/ 187k miles on it.. Though I do beleive it may have been either rebuilt or the HG changed and one point in time.. But any car you beat the **** out of will blow a headgasket..

it was my mothers car, she drives very slow, never beat on it, she never took it over 60mph. But i did when i was 14. I had it up to 95 and it would not go any faster.
Neon Rt, what engine do you have in your car. Im looking to get a 2nd gen engine, and don't know what to get. I might get lucky at the junkyard and find a good one.

How did you confirm the HG was the cause for the low compression? There are lots of things that can cause low compression. The MLS gasket is a great quality piece.

NEONRT98, has an R/T, so he would have a DOHC engine in there, unless he swapped it out.

its 3 layers of steel. It has a rectangle kinda tab on one side, and 2 smaller circle looking tabs also. It was leaking a little oil, but that wasnt the entire problem, the piston rings were shot too. The top of the pistons were black.
I was thinking about trying to get a sohc motor, it has to be 2nd gen, i dont want problems. Also has to fit in a 1st gen without many problems. An 02 sohc will fit, all i have to do is change the sensors.

Also das can you answer my window clip problem

I don't know anything about the window clips, sorry!

Any SOHC motor with the MLS should be fine. I can understand wanting to go with a newer motor, but you don't have to.
