Default Is This Safe (or Practical)?

My friend knows a lot of **** about cars. He himself put a Corvette engine into his truck, etc, etc so I guess you could say he knows what he's doing.

So last night, he took a quick look at my hood and took off that big black blastic thing that says "SOHC 2.0L 16 Valve" that I think connects to the air filter.

He said it's just a ghetto way to have a short ram intake. I wasn't really sure if I believe him 'til I drove it around. I noticed it sounded a hell of a lot louder (in a good way) and sped up a little quicker. He told me the only downsides to it is that you lose a couple MPG and your air filter gets dirtier quicker.

But I also noticed that when I floor it and it's building up speed it shifts a lot later (I have an automatic) at around 6,000 RPMs which is pretty close to red lining it.

So my question to you all is; is this safe for my car and is it even practical for now until I can buy an Iceman CAI somehow?

All you are getting is sound...it has no HP benefits at all. It's not unsafe, except for the dirtier filter you will have now.

V8 guys aren't 4 cyl guys . What works for them, doesn't always work for us!

The "thing" that you are referring to is called a snorkel.

Good to know. Shame it doesn't change my HP at all, 'cuz it sounded pretty sexy. Getting my sound deadener for my trunk put in tomorrow. After that, I'm going to start saving up for a CAI.[sm=grin.gif]

You get 1 HP if you remove the weather stripping from the back of the hood and thats more effective than removing the snorkel.

You trying to get the Iceman?

Well seeing as how Iceman makes the only true CAI for the Neon, I'm going to try to find one somehow once I have the money. But it's real hard for me to save up money so it's going to take a while...

Will I have to do anything difficult like reloacate my battery to the trunk when I put in the CAI? Because I rather not have to reroute all my speaker and subwoofer wires along with the battery to the trunk...

Let me know when you have around $150 and I can help you find one.

You don't have to relocate the battery with the Iceman. It comes with a new battery tray that slides the battery back enough to clear the intake. You could also just trim the stock battery tray to fit it also.

The snorkel is only found on 1995 SOHCs. The stock intake system is different from '95's and '96+.
