Default torque and horsepower

my friend (who owns a Celica) has been saying to me alot since i got my neon that its horrible to have more HP than torque.

his Celica has 110 HP and 115 torque and my neon has 150 HP and 133 torque and i think he thinks that his is "better" just because of the fact that he has more torque vs. horsepower.

if this is the case, then why would Dodge make an engine that has more torque than horsepower?

they must have done it for a reason. so, what is the reason exactly?

remember this fact the next time he says stuff...

toyota had to recall a lot of their cars last year
why?
because they make crappy cars

the only good toyotas were the AE86 for its 50/50 weight distrubution
and the supra
because the supra is a fast and sick car

and you could beat him in a race
hahah

mos engines...cept for truck engines have more HP than torque... and torque just gets u going...but its the HP that keeps u going so for take off more torque is better but then when it comes to holding the speed and such its better to have more HP...its a toss up i see it as... your Neon could still beat that Toyota

The hp torque is a touchy subject with all.

Horsepower is torque multiplied by the RPM's.

Thus more torque is a good thing, but having the rev's to support is also good.

Think about a 2 stroke, no torque and it has power on every stroke. Unlike a 4 stroke, where it has power every other stroke.
That 2 stroke makes more power than a comparable 4 stroke becuase it can rev much free'er and higher, no valves, cams to push around.
That 4 stroke has higher compression which enables it to have more torque but not as high the revs.

Saying more torque than hp is better is like saying you can measure hp by engine size. Its a completely ignorant comment. Either the guy is jealous of your car, or is a complete idiot.

pimp's right, hp is a math fromula gotten by torque. all dynos measure torque. play with the math to get hp. torque is the twisting force measured in pounds/Kg per unit of measure (lbs-ft/Kg-m). hp is a discription of how much torque can be produced in a given time/rpm.

think of a diesel motor. they make great torque, but not much hp. lots of grunt, but no accel. they just can't make enough torque fast enough. hope this helps, happy motoring.

what really metters is track times...

I know a guy with a 600hp Cobra that cant get any lower then 12.5 on 1/4mile ETs, yet another guy I know has 380hp and runs 12.08s all day long...

It is as much set up as it is horsepower. You can make 1/2 the power, but have twice the experience and twice the amount of $ in your suspension, and kick ars.

HP numbers dont provide anything except bragging rights, but who has the real bragging rights when a car with 1/2 the HP kicks the Cobras tail?

You can keep your 600hp in my opinion, just give me 350 and a kick ars susp!!!

Horsepower by definition is work over time. Torque is a measure of work a rotational force.

P= (T*N)/5250

P = Power, hp
N = Rotational shaft speed, rpm
T = Torque, lb-ft
